Annual Picnic

We had 98 reservations for the ETSURA picnic on June 17 !  The venue this year was The DEPOT at Franklin Commons in the new Food City at the corner of State of Franklin and Sunset.  They were greeted and directed to the elevator by members of the ETSURA board.  The venue was much appreciated by those using walkers and canes.  The food was marvelous and the view was fun as one could see all the aisles in the grocery store.

Guests were Dr. Wilsie Bishop, COO, ETSU; Scott Carter, Senior Athletic Director and COO Athletics; and Yaser Zaatini, Director of Tennis and Men’s Head Coach.  All three guests gave updates in their areas of responsibility.  Dr. Bishop updated us briefly on some of the things going on on campus.  Scott Carter spoke about fund raising opportunities he is pursuing for the new stadium.  When the stadium is finished there will be a space which will be dedicated to group activities.  This space would be available for use for our picnic if we were to choose to use it.  Yaser Zaatini spoke about the success of the Men’s doubles team in reaching the NCAA Final Four after three upsets. We are all very proud of that.  The Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams earned intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team Honors while having 10 students named as Scholar Athletes.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the venue, the parking, and the accessibility.  We will certainly look into using The DEPOT next year.  One member said we would have to change the name.

Move In Day

Ethel Garrity

On Thursday August 18 ETSURA members once again assisted in Move-in-Day in Governor’s Hall on the ETSU campus from 7:30am to 1:00 pm.  Thanks to Charles Moore for the coffee and I promise to bring napkins for the donuts next time!  Volunteers were Ethel Garrity, Charles Moore, Gail Burleson, Judy Story, Ted Hughes, Priscilla Ramsey, Dave Kalwinsky, Betty Tester,  Mike and Janis Miyamoto.

As usual the lines were long and many parents hovered over their student.  I try always to address the student.  No, you do not have to stand in line for “your” student!  My sister commented to me that Move-in-Day is hard work.  Not true for us retirees; we don’t have to lift anything!  It was rumored, and true that Dr. Noland was seen moving heavy things. Students and their parents continue to look younger and younger every year.  This is still one of my favorite days of the year.  Readers should consider volunteering next year.  It is always lots of fun.

Eat and Chat

The next Eat and Chat will be held September 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Golden Corral (3104 Browns Mill Road behind Logan’s Roadhouse). Our speaker will be Geoff Stunkard who will be discussing the Carter Railroad Museum and Heritage Days. Geoff is the volunteer coordinator and representative of the Carter Railroad Museum.
