Function of Position
The Dean is the academic and administrative leader of the College, who seeks to promote excellence in teaching, research and service. He/she oversees the activities of all departments and centers within the college, and is responsible for all programmatic, personnel and budgetary issues within the college.
Essential Functions
- Develops and administers college level policies and procedures
- Oversees academic programs in the college, seeking to ensure their curricular rigor, staffing, and support
- Makes hiring, reappointment, and tenure and promotion recommendations to the Vice President for Academic Affairs
- Conducts evaluations of all faculty
- Evaluates and makes appointment recommendations of department chairs
- Makes budgetary decisions and recommendations
- Allocates space assigned to the college
- Works collaboratively with chairs and faculty within the College of Arts and Sciences, and with deans of other colleges
- Serves as liaison between department chairs and vice presidents
- Conducts regular meetings of the college faculty, and the college Council of Chairs
- Serves on Deans Council, Academic Council, President’s Council
- Attends and participates in university commencement activities
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of academic disciplines represented within the college and appropriate standards within those disciplines.
- Knowledge of accrediting standards and practices that apply at the university, college and department levels.
- Knowledge of university, TBR and THEC policies and decision-making processes
- Knowledge of budgetary procedures.
- Ability to provide leadership in a wide array of academic areas.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Ability to think creatively, solve problems, and resolve conflicts.
- Ability to develop and implement plans, and to recognize and pursue opportunities.
- Ability to represent the college effectively on campus, to students and parents, and in the community.
Supervision Given and Received
Initiates broad programs under
general direction, working from policies and general objectives. Supervises
administrative heads of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned terminal degree in appropriate discipline
within the college; ten years university teaching experience; five years
experience in university administration; and scholarly activity appropriate for
the rank of full professor.
