Function of Position

Responsible to the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students for developing and leading university wide placement services, cooperative education/ internships, career planning for students and alumni; maintaining career resource center and organizing data for research in workforce, labor and career areas; resolving problems with academic and support input; communicating with employers by travel presentations, written material and telemarketing; writing grant proposals for funding; administering budget for cost benefit analyses; supervising administrative and support staff; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Coordinates cooperative education student in field.

- Develops employer relationships and solicits job opportunities (co-op and full-time).

- Promotes academic majors for student/alumni submission to specific employers.

- Presents workshops regarding employment trends, salaries, geographic implications, and legal issues in employment.

- Supervises office staff.

Secondary Functions

- Maintains functional reports; administers budgets and foundation accounts.

- Establishes procedures for maintenance of office databases, technical systems and equipment.

- Serves on university committees.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of all phases of career development process, including practicum education for credit.

- Knowledge of computer applications.

- Knowledge of external funding methods.

- Knowledge of workshop design.

- Knowledge of higher education administration.

- Ability to work in a pressure environment and make aggressive job development efforts.

- Ability to successfully and aggressively contact prospective employers.

- Ability to work independently and prioritize.

- Ability to communicate effectively with employers and all departments of the university.

- Ability to present workshops.

Supervision Given and Received

Initiates broad programs under general direction, working from policies and general objectives. Directly supervises administrative and support staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in behavioral sciences or business; two years experience in business, industry or government; three years in cooperative education, placement, or career planning administration desirable.
