Function of Position
Responsible to the Systems Support Manager for long term planning and design of
the university’s data and network and integration with campus network
infrastructure and other computer systems including but not limited to Windows,
Linux, Solaris, and Macintosh; overseeing day-to-day administration,
maintenance, setup, configuration and troubleshooting.
Essential Functions
-
Maintains responsibility for long term planning and design of the university’s
data, network and integration with campus network infrastructure and other
computer systems.

Coordinates maintenance or developmental projects for operating systems
or related software to include installations of new software or equipment,
modifications, or system software fixes.
Performs capacity planning and resource allocation for all University systems.
Prepares plans for Business Continuity (Disaster Recovery).

Analyzes and writes specifications for possible improvements of operating
system software; designs, develops or recommends new or revised systems or
system utilities as necessary.

Analyzes and prepares documentation concerning the adaptation of complex
software systems and processes to the computing equipment.

Coordinates with computer users to provide information about system
capabilities and to recommend changes in procedures or other solutions to
improved efficiency and resolve problems.

Revises, enhances, updates and installs vendor supplies systems software
components to optimize performance of the computer system.

Diagnoses operating systems software/hardware failures by reviewing
system logs, dumps, and other information form users or technical personnel;
confers with vendors; indentifies and/or develops solutions.

Maintains knowledge of current and emerging systems technologies and
their application to University systems.

Serves as primary administrator of University Administrative Email
System, Document imaging and storage system (Optidoc), Banner Servers OS,
Virtual Infrastructure, EMC Storage Area Network, and Blackberry enterprise
server.

Serves as secondary back-up for all other applications that Systems
Support is responsible for supporting.
Secondary Functions
-
Administers other departmental systems outside of OIT ownership (Housing, ID
Services, CBAT, and COM).
Maintains User Account Administration.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
-
Knowledge of Windows desktop operating systems (2000, XP, and Vista),
Windows server operating systems (NT, 2000, 2003, and future versions).

Knowledge of Sun Solaris 9 and 10 operating systems, RedHat Linux, VMware
ESX, VMware Virtual Center, Active Directory, Windows security, Microsoft
Exchange 2003, 2007 and future versions, EMC storage area networks, Microsoft
SQL, Microsoft Internet Information Server, Windows clustering technologies,
DNS, DHCP, Document imaging.

Knowledge of Oracle databases, Oracle backup and recovery, Microsoft
Software Update Services, backup and recovery strategies, Microsoft Project
server, Windows Media Server, TCP/IP protocol, email protocols (SMTP, POP, IMAP
and MAPI), understanding of Datacenter cooling and electrical power needs.
Supervision Given and Received
Performs under general supervision.
Plans and arranges own work which is directed toward an established objective.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field;
5 years experience in systems management in multi-user environment; MCP or MCSE
license, training in Microsoft Windows Administration and Sun Solaris
Administration, Microsoft Exchange system management, EMC Clariion
Administration, VMware infrastructure design and administration and advance
training.
