Responsible to the Associate Director of Housing for assisting with creating and maintaining a positive residential and campus community; enhancing the educational and personal development of the residents; assisting in the effective management and maintenance of housing areas so that the needs of both student and university are met; providing education in essential life skills, contemporary social issues, counseling in crisis and problematic situations; acting as an informational liaison between students/housing staff and housing and/or the university; selecting, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating residence life staff; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Selects, hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, instructs, and provides professional development support for all residence life staff serving approximately 2200 students living in on-campus residence halls and apartments, assuring adequate and reliable staff coverage in all facilities; a 24/7 administrative staff on-call coverage system; appropriate behavioral management of staff and residents; risk and crisis management; an educational component to the on-campus living and learning experience through daily interactions with residents and staff, hall programs and activities, and learning communities such as the First Year Experience and Freshman Success programs; and appropriately maintained facilities. - Manages complaints from students and parents regarding problems with the on-campus living experience and/or personal, social, academic, financial, family concerns; provides appropriate problem solving, advice, counsel, and/or referring. - Helps recruit, select, train, and advise Residence Hall Judicial Board and provides an effective and efficient disciplinary process to include conducting pre-hearings, investigations, hearings, and follow-up when appropriate. - Develops housing policies and procedures applicable to the behavioral management of student residents and staff, crisis interventions, hall/room assignment processes, camps and conferences, and facility management; provides policies and procedures in an up-to-date residence life staff handbook. - Represents Housing and Residence Life in the planning, development, and implementation of university/division student and staff socialization and educational initiatives which include Preview, Alcohol and Other Drug Task Force, Homecoming, Academic Advantage and College Adjustment academic courses, orientation, hosting guest speakers, crisis management team. - Supervises the advisement of individual hall governments and the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and assists with the facilitation of leadership development and democratic community living through these venues, overseeing and administering the programming budgets of the Hall Councils and RHA by maintaining financial records for each entity; ensures compliance with university policies and procedures in fundraising, collecting, and disbursing funds including payment of sales tax; ensures participation of residents and residence hall staff in state, regional, and national RHA activities and conferences that facilitate student/staff leadership development and positive representation of the housing and residence life office.
Secondary Functions
- Advises and mentors the National Residence Hall Honorary and International Living and Learning Community; actively participates in all of the financial, social, and educational programming, and organizational endeavors; attends meetings; ensures that university guidelines are followed in all operations of the organizations. - Serves as a member of the senior housing staff in developing overall strategies, planning, and policies that complement and facilitate residence life objectives; assists in conducting appropriate research to support initiatives. - Serves on university standing, search, and ad hoc committees including Chair of the Tuition Refund Appeals Committee, member of Faculty Senate, and Commission for Women. - Markets housing through community visits, speaking and promoting to guests on special event days and brochure development. - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of student development, teaching skills, and experience in counseling, human relations and community development. - Knowledge of university and housing policies and procedures. - Knowledge of the wellness model of student development and a variety of programs including physical, occupational, social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. - Ability to relate to a diverse group of students, parents, and university employees. - Ability to supervise, provide direction and train staff in a residential setting. - Ability to analyze, evaluate and develop solutions to problems. - Ability to communicate effectively.
Supervision Given and Received
Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in student personnel, education, counseling or related area of concentration; three to five years of supervisory experience in a residence life setting and higher education program development, management and training; experience and/or coursework in areas of student development, teaching skills, counseling, human relations and/or community development.
