Function of Position
Responsible to the Athletic Director for ensuring that private and corporate support continues to increase; serving as the face of scholarship and corporate gifts for the department and for the University as a whole; generating a minimum of $1,000,000 per year in departmental revenues, with the ultimate goal of raising $2.5 million annually for scholarships and operating expenses; managing all external fund-raising activities for intercollegiate athletics, from both corporate and private individual sources which includes coordination of all donor benefits, acting as a liaison with the institutional advancement staff, marketing, media and sales promotions, and managing all athletic support groups; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Identifies funding sources, initiates strategies, and cultivates, solicits and secures funding for athletics programs through special events, campaigns, personal contacts and proposals to meet the long term objectives of ETSU athletics in concert with the strategic plans, goals, policies and procedures set forth by University Advancement. - Develops special events and coordinates all fund-raising activities through the Executive Director for Athletic Advancement. - Coordinates the Buccaneer Athletic Scholarship Association (BASA) Board of Directors and directs a coordinated plan to secure external funding for university athletics. - Maintains a donor database. - Develops and implements the annual fund drive for the BASA to raise funds for athletic scholarships. - Organizes and supervises additional activities to benefit athletics, which will include fund-raising projects and special events such as golf tournaments, luncheons, tailgating, and award banquets. - Serves on the department senior staff for long and short-term planning, development of policies, and development of the budget. - Coordinates with ETSU Alumni Office and Assistant Director for BASA (position under audit) to organize local BASA groups in cities with Atlantic Sun member institutions in order to expand our base. - Assists in all aspects of endowment programs or capital projects as deemed necessary. - Assists in the strategic planning for the enhancement of all aspects of athletic advancement. - Articulates the needs of the athletic department to a variety of constituencies. - Maintains a full stewardship, pledge and gift acknowledgment system. - Plans and implements specials events in collaboration with the Athletic Director, support groups and University Advancement. - Provides leadership to the BASA board. - Assists in working closely with professionals in the University Advancement Office to ensure that the athletic fund-raising program is in harmony with the university’s high fund-raising standards and goals. - Develops and initiates comprehensive marketing plan, strategies and priorities. - Cultivates external business opportunities and corporate partnerships to include, but not limited to, marketing, advertising, promotions, and game sponsorships. - Coordinates and oversees all marketing and promotional programs, both internal and external, that relate to university athletics. - Coordinates all advertising and corporate hospitality programs. - Plans and implements comprehensive direct mail and telemarketing initiatives each year, in cooperation with the University Advancement Office. - Prepares the annual Athletic Advancement Operational Plan. - Prepares an annual operating budget that reflects upcoming operations. - Prepares reports on the status of the athletic department as required. - Functions as the direct athletic advancement liaison with university support groups. - Remains in full compliance with NCAA, University, and Atlantic Sun Conference rules. - Complies with all NCAA rules and regulations, and acknowledges this compliance as part of an annual evaluation process. - Signs an NCAA Compliance Statement annually.
Secondary Functions
- Coordinates special events for Men’s Basketball throughout the year. - Coordinates all department planning meetings. - Attends job related conferences and continuing education whenever possible. - Supervises exempt and non-exempt staff. - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of fund raising techniques and donor development. - Knowledge of university intercollegiate athletic programs. - Knowledge of current industry software. - Knowledge of effective principles of organization and management. - Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, donors, and volunteers. - Ability to communicate effectively. - Ability to be a dynamic public speaker.
Supervision Given and Received
Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Directly supervises administrative and classified employees.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, master’s degree preferred; three years of senior level management experience with an athletic, business, or philanthropic organization; experience and skills must include fund-raising or related activities; demonstrated ability to develop strategic plans and organize and implement programs; experience with computers and various software applications.
