Function of Position

Responsible to the Director for serving as the lead person in the areas of recruitment, retention and academic advisement for ETSU at Kingsport; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Advises ETSU at Kingsport adult and traditional age students involving careers, class schedules and other educational concerns.

- Maintains relationships with area high school students and guidance counselors with regular high school visits and/or other programming essential to recruitment.

- Maintains thorough, confidential records of student advisement activities.

- Monitors student progress through use of established programs such as Freshman Success and Early Semester Progress Reports, and intervenes to help those students in need.

- Refers students to university specialized personnel and assistance programs as needed.

- Maintains current knowledge of available assistance programs and university policies and procedures.

- Assembles information and organizes reports related to student data.

- Acts as liaison between faculty and students having academic difficulty.

- Maintains regular contact with students.

- Works closely with director to develop and implement an effective student recruitment program.

- Provides information to potential students related to the admissions process; assists students with interpretation of transfer credits.

- Administers COMPASS exam to new students.

- Initiates and makes follow-up contacts with prospective students.

- Works extended hours as needed to recruit and advise students.

Secondary Functions

- Helps students prepare forms and makes initial contacts with other university personnel when late drops, adds, schedule overloads or course withdrawals are requested.

- Conducts two focus group sessions each semester for ETSU at Kingsport students.

- Provides information to the director regarding semester course requests.

- Creates and publishes the ETSU at Kingsport newsletter.

- Advises students at university orientation sessions.

- Assists with preparation of brochures and other materials related to the recruitment of students.

- Represents the director at various committee meetings related to assigned duty areas as needed.

- Participates on various university committees including academic advisement committee and registration committee.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of university undergraduate programs, curricula and the general education core.

- Knowledge of legal and confidentiality issues related to student advisement.

- Knowledge of effective record keeping systems.

- Knowledge of university support programs and services.

- Knowledge of effective student recruitment methods.

- Ability to communicate effectively.

- Ability to speak effectively to groups of people.

- Ability to use computers and various software programs.

- Ability to gather, analyze and interpret data.

- Ability to work independently and prioritize work.

- Ability to work well with others.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; one year experience in advisement at the university level.
