Function of Position

 Responsible to the Chair of Cross-Disciplinary Studies in the School of Continuing Studies for coordinating various tutoring services for general education and other courses, particularly courses that place undergraduate students at high risk of failure and withdrawal; developing and supervising program services; training and supervising graduate students, work-study students, and peer tutors; serving as a liaison to academic departments and faculty, publicizing services, teaching developmental studies reading (DSPR) and learning strategies (DSPS) courses when assigned, and maintaining appropriate assessment data; and performing other related duties as assigned.

 Essential Functions

 -        Designs, plans, coordinates, and implements various services and activities to support student access in general education and other courses, particularly courses that place undergraduate students at high risk of failure or withdrawal.

-        Provides a variety of direct academic support services, i.e., one-on-one tutoring, Supplemental Instructions, study groups, PAL-Peer-Assisted Learning, and D2L Online Tutoring to meet students’ needs and best deploy available resources.

-        Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates graduate assistants, multiple work-study students, and peer leaders for Supplemental Instruction, peer-assisted learning, and study groups.

-        Establishes and maintains communication with ETSU academic departments and faculty to provide services to support the curriculum.

-        Teaches Developmental Reading and/or Learning Strategy Courses as assigned.

-        Develops and maintains appropriate online materials and services for students.

-        Works with Disability Services and other groups to provide appropriate services for students with disabilities and other factors.

-        Develops and implements appropriate goals, objectives, and assessments of program success; maintains appropriate documentation of student participation and success.

-        Disperses PAL-Peer Assisted Learning Questionnaire and D2L Online Tutoring Survey each semester.

-        Collects data to access, analyze and make programmatic changes.

-        Maintains attendance roster of PAL-Peer Assisted Learning and D2L Online Tutoring.

-        Manages budget and routine operations.

-        Keeps the Chair informed and consults on non-routine decisions and problems.

 

Secondary Functions

 

-        Serves on appropriate university and college committees.

-        Participates in appropriate professional organizations; pursues continuing education to stay current and improve skills.

-       Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

-        Knowledge of Educational Learning Strategies for academic support.

-        Knowledge of the needs of students at high risk for poor academic performance.

-        Knowledge of academic resources on campus.

-        Knowledge of university policies and procedures.

-        Knowledge of computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and knowledge of basic web development, online course management systems and tutoring.

-        Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

-        Ability to coordinate a staff of graduate assistants, student workers, and peer tutors/group leaders.

-        Ability to function independently.

-        Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data.

-        Ability to instruct developmental reading/learning strategy courses successfully.

 

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Performs under general supervision; Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Required: Master’s degree in Education or related area (18 graduate hours in reading preferred); two successful years working with traditional and non-traditional college students; experience in organizing and coordinating an educational program; experience budgeting, supervising student personnel, providing academic support services,  and tutoring (PAL Peer Assisted Learning, D2L Online Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and/or similar programs). Preferred: Successful experience teaching developmental reading and learning strategies courses.
