Position Title:   Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Executive Director

Function of Position

 

As the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, is responsible for university-wide programs and initiatives to improve the academic success of undergraduate students at ETSU; as the Executive Director of the Office of Planning and Analysis, provides broad guidance for the university’s strategic planning, institutional research and reporting, and institutional effectiveness activities; performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

 

As Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education:

§  Oversees the general education program, including curricula, assessment and improvement initiatives; chairs General Education Advisory Council.

§  Works closely with the provost on curriculum planning and budgeting as they relate to undergraduate students.

§  Oversees the university’s across-the-curriculum requirements, related graduation requirements (e.g., the computer proficiency requirement) and the Writing and Communication Center; supervises the directors of the across-the-curriculum programs and the Director of the Writing and Communication Center.

§  Oversees the development, implementation and assessment of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP); supervises the director of the QEP.

§  Oversees the university’s efforts to improve undergraduate retention and degree completion rates.

§  Oversees the university’s efforts to increase undergraduate student engagement.

§  Serves as the university’s liaison to the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission on issues concerning undergraduate education, including general education.

§  Oversees first-year experience programs for new undergraduate students; supervises the Director of the University Seminar Program, and promotes attention to support and special programming for undeclared majors.

§  Oversees university-wide efforts to improve undergraduate learning, including the Academic Quality Initiative.

§  Promotes development of learning communities (coordinated as appropriate with Student Affairs).

 

As Executive Director of the Office of Planning and Analysis:

§  Provides leadership to the university in conducting sound planning and institutional effectiveness processes.

§  Provides oversight and support for strategic planning.

§  Assists in the development and practice of effective communication related to planning and major university initiatives.

§  Oversees university units that conduct institutional research, reporting and Performance Funding activities.

§  Works collaboratively with Vice Provost for Academic Affairs to facilitate reporting by university units on planning and institutional effectiveness.

 

Other assigned duties:

§  Supervises maintenance of the Faculty Handbook by Academic Affairs Office Manager; oversees tenure and promotion and academic personnel policies; serves as liaison to the Tennessee Board of Regents on matters related to these policies.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

§  Knowledge of best practices and emerging issues regarding general education and undergraduate education.

§  Knowledge of assessment and improvement methodologies and of best practices and emerging issues in this area.

§  Knowledge of accreditation, TBR and THEC policies.

§  Ability to develop communication goals and programs based on analysis of situational needs and constituent attitudes, knowledge and expectations.

§  Ability to design and manage complex projects.

§  Ability to prepare and present reports effectively, both orally and in writing.

§  Ability to organize and direct a staff of professional and administrative personnel.

§  Ability to promote student success and faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.

§  Ability to communicate effectively with diverse campus and community constituent groups.

§  Ability to make sound decisions.

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Initiates broad programs under general direction, working from policies and general objectives.  Supervises directors of across-the-curriculum programs in oral communication, information technology and writing; Director of the Writing and Communication Center; Assistant Vice President for Institutional Research; Director of Assessment and Performance Funding; Assistant Director for Data Management; Director of University Seminar Program; Director of the Quality Enhancement Plan.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Earned terminal degree in appropriate discipline with a minimum of five years college teaching experience; five years experience in administration; and evidence of scholarly activity.
