Function of Position

 

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Coordinator of Health Professions Student Services provides a range of services to pre-medical professions students and the faculty who work with them.  These include course scheduling and other advisement to new and continuing pre-medical students, working cooperatively with the departments of the College of Arts and Sciences, working with the Medical Professions Advisement and Pre-Medical/Medical Program Committees, and serving as liaison with the admissions offices of medical and other health professions schools at ETSU and elsewhere.     

 

Essential Functions

 

-        Assists with course scheduling and registration for new and continuing pre-medial students.

-        Provides accurate and current information about medical and other health professions schools to students through individual meetings, mailings, and the web.

-        Maintains confidential student application files and records.

-        Guides students through medical school application and admission processes.

-        Assists faculty committees in researching admission decisions and in preparing confidential recommendation letters for students.

-        Recruits pre-medical students through high school and college visits.

-        Handles confidential correspondence with prospective students and parents.

-        Conducts information session for students and parents at new student orientations.

-        Maintains records of advisement and other contacts, and generates reports as needed.

-        Works cooperatively with advisors in departments in which pre-medical students major.

-        Provides input to departments regarding courses needed by pre-medical students.

-        Develops and maintains professional interactions with counterparts at other universities.

-        Serves as liaison with the admissions offices of medical and other health professions schools.

-        Serves as a resource for college and department personnel on student issues including scholarship and other financial aid applications.

-        Supervises support staff.

 

 

Secondary Functions

 

-        Assists other advisors in the College of Arts and Sciences as time permits.

-        Assists with answering telephone, filing and other related office duties as required.

-       Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

-        Ability to work effectively with students and parents.

-        Ability to function well as a member of an advising team.

-        Ability to maintain effective working relationships with administrators, staff, faculty and others at ETSU and at other institutions.

-        Ability to write and communicate orally, including public speaking.

-        Knowledge of general education and pre-medical course requirements.

-        Knowledge of university support programs and services.

-        Knowledge of admission requirements and application process for medical and other health professional schools.

-        Knowledge of office computer skills.

 

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Performs under general supervision.  Plans and arranges own work which is directed toward an established objective.  Supervises administrative and support staff.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Master’s degree required; two years of experience working with students in a higher education setting; academic advising or related experience preferred.
