Position Title:  Director of Sports Medicine/Head Trainer

Function of Position

Responsible to the Director of Athletics for coordinating all intercollegiate athletics medical activities; supervising and managing the athletic training room; supervising all assistant athletic trainers, graduate assistant trainers, and student trainers; working with the Clinic Director of BucSports Athletic Medicine Center to coordinate all medical services to student-athletes and the public; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

-        Monitors the issuance and use of all prescription medications.

-        Ensures proper protective equipment and supplies are available to all student-athletes.

-        Monitors athletic training budget.

-        Acts as liaison with team physicians, all medical and well support personnel for event coverage.

-        Coordinates the purchase and maintenance of athletic training room supplies through athletics administration.

-        Coordinates student-athlete drug-testing programs.

-        Coordinates yearly physical exams and maintains all records for event coverage.

-        Coordinates all medical activities within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics within NCAA, institutional, and state policy.

-        Assists the BucSports physician with history and physical evaluations of outpatient clinic.

-        Assists the BucSports physical therapists as needed.

-        Coordinates student-athlete health insurance coverage.

-        Obtains continuing education requirements to fulfill state and national requirement for license renewal.

-        Serves as member of departmental senior staff.

-        Remains in full compliance with NCAA, University, and Southern Conference rules.

-        Complies with all NCAA rules and regulations, and acknowledges this compliance as part of an annual evaluation process.

-        Signs an NCAA Compliance Statement annually.

Secondary Functions

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

-        Knowledge of basic principles of supervision.

-        Knowledge of proper and effective protective equipment to be used by student-athletes.

-        Knowledge of prescription medicines generally used by student-athletes.

-        Knowledge of a wide variety of athletic training room supplies and equipment.

-        Ability to coordinate medical activities surrounding a variety of athletic programs.

-        Ability to form and maintain effective working relationships with area physicians and other medical support personnel.

-        Ability to effectively treat a wide variety of sports injuries under the supervision of team physician.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.  Supervises assistant athletic trainers and student assistant athletic trainers.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with emphasis in athletic training required; master's degree required in a related area such as athletic administration, sports management, or athletic medicine; certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and Athletic Trainer Certification (A.T.C.) Tennessee State Certification required; certification in first aid and current CPR card required; EMT certification preferred; three to five years experience in athletic training, preferably two to three years at Division I level, and two years experience with an outpatient physical therapy clinic and/or physician required; Orthopedic Technologist Certification as well as experience in administering insurance, casting and splinting, and orthopedic bracing.
