Function of Position

Responsible to the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students for overseeing student publications including both the East Tennessean newspaper and the Buccaneer yearbook; overseeing all budgetary concerns for both publications; advising, directing, training and assisting all staff members for both publications; acting as liaison between student publications and other offices, departments and activities on campus; assisting in all production capacities; maintaining office computer equipment; teaching one course each semester in the communications department; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Advises and directs students in the planning and production of the student newspaper and yearbook.

- Teaches students about news reporting, writing, editing, layout, and legal and ethical issues.

- Oversees advertising and financial aspects of publications; participates in marketing projects.

- Teaches newswriting or reporting class; coordinates class activities with newspaper and yearbook; grades papers for class.

- Attends Student Affairs meetings and assists with planning efforts.

Secondary Functions

- Maintains and monitors computer equipment used in both publications.

- Monitors the delivery of newspapers twice weekly and the distribution of the yearbook annually.

- Acts as liaison between student publications and other departments and groups on campus.

- Assists office manager in overseeing advertising department, preparing payroll, travel requests and purchasing supplies.

- Monitors financial status of publications.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of basic and advanced journalism, newswriting and reporting.

- Knowledge of newspaper and yearbook layout, printing and reproduction, editing and advertising.

- Knowledge of journalism and print ethics and laws.

- Knowledge of computers and related software.

- Knowledge of basic photographic processing.

- Knowledge of basic bookkeeping and budget management.

- Ability to communicate effectively.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in journalism or English; experience in newspapers, preferably reporting, editing and layout; two years professional experience in newspapers.
