potential; Function of Position Responsible to the Director of the Student Health Clinic for delivering health care to students in collaboration with the precepting physician; identifying, managing and/or referring health problems and providing care which prevents illness and promotes health; and performing other related duties as assigned. Essential Functions - Assesses actual/potential health hazards and current health status including analysis of health behavior related to lifestyle and culture. - Provides accessible and economical health care services. - Performs assessment, evaluates signs and symptoms, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests and laboratory results including physician performed microscopic procedures in lab. - Initiates treatment and manages treatment plans for acute, non-complex illnesses. - Obtains relevant patient medical and social histories. - Monitors and reviews patient care and treatment plans; arranges needed follow-up. - Provides effective communication and education to patients regarding the diagnosis and management of their health problems, appropriate preventative measures, and optimal use of the health care system. - Provides treatment consistent with clinical assessment and diagnoses. - Documents clinical findings, assessment and management in patient health record. - Consults and collaborates with other disciplines involved in the delivery of health care. - Communicates adequate information in a timely fashion to other health care providers involved in the client's care. - Assists students to assume individual responsibility for the prevention of illness and the promotion maintenance and restoration of health. - Supports the learning and practice of students of the College of Nursing and other departments of the Division of Health Sciences. - Ensures adequacy of clinic capability for response to client emergency including maintenance of supplies and staff training. - Contributes to the research and quality improvement effort for the department. - Completes laboratory proficiency testing and submits findings. - Identifies and proposes new procedures and medications to be added to clinic services. Secondary Functions - Attends student health clinic meetings and in-service program. - Establishes and revises written clinical protocol in collaboration with clinic physicians. - Promotes professional growth of clinical staff. - Participates in outreach efforts including education of student community. - Serves on university committees as assigned. - Maintains competence to practice as nurse practitioner. - Contributes to scholarship effort of College of Nursing. - Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of primary care procedures including physical exams, histories, patient education, nutrition and behavioral interventions. - Knowledge of prescriptive pharmacology. - Knowledge of advanced nursing skills and related techniques. - Ability to follow clinical protocol, to develop new protocols and revise existing ones. - Ability to communicate effectively. - Ability to supervise patient care rendered by nursing and support staff. - Ability to assume leadership of clinical team in management of medical emergencies. Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in nursing; master's degree as a clinical nurse practitioner; current Tennessee license and ANCC certification and eligible for Tennessee Prescriptive Privileges; one year of experience as nurse practitioner, preferably in ambulatory care.
