Function of Position Responsible to the Chair for responsibilities and duties associated with all undergraduate advisement including developing and maintaining advisement materials for advisors and advisees; providing faculty with updated advisement information; developing and maintaining faculty advising load; attending orientations; advising and mentoring all first year, transfer, change-of-major and returning CSCI students for a one-year time period; coordinating course review with faculty to determine CSCI course equivalencies for transfer students; assisting with the completion of graduation forms as needed; counseling students experiencing academic difficulty; serving as liaison for students changing majors; serving as contact person for prospective CSCI majors; assisting the Associate Dean of Transfer Articulation in developing and maintaining articulation agreements with regional community colleges and coordinating advisement sessions at such colleges in recruitment of new students; serving on various university committees and assisting with the yearly GIST (Girls in Science and Technology) camp; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions - Develops curriculum and teaches CSCI 1510, Student in the University, for freshman students. - Coordinates and maintains departmental undergraduate advisement program for the Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CSCI). - Maintains database of current CSCI majors. - Develops and maintains advisement materials for advisors and advisees including providing faculty with updated advisement information. - Develops and maintains faculty advising load. - Serves as the Advisor for the Department of Computer and Information Sciences including advising and mentoring all first year, transfer, change-of-major and returning CSCI students for a one-year period and attending all orientations. - Provides advisement and mentoring during absence of faculty (between semesters and summer months). - Coordinates course review with faculty to determine CSCI course equivalencies for transfer students. - Assists with the completion of graduation forms as needed. - Counsels CSCI majors experiencing academic difficulty based on ESPR. - Serves as liaison for students changing majors. - Serves as contact person for prospective CSCI majors. - Assists the Associate Dean of Transfer Articulation in developing and maintaining articulation agreements with regional community colleges. - Coordinates advisement sessions at regional community colleges holding articulation agreements. - Assists the Chair and Assistant Chair, Department of Computer and Information Sciences, in developing systems for improving the advising process. - Participates in departmental, college and university training for advisors regarding departmental curriculum policies, university policies, student services, academic advisement and retention efforts. - Represents the Department of Computer and Information Sciences in recruitment efforts including visiting area colleges and universities. - Collects information from Curriculum Committee, faculty and the Chair, Department of Computer and Information Sciences, for updated reporting concerning the university catalog. - Coordinates and conducts exit interviews for all undergraduate CSCI majors including compiling all data pertaining to the interviews for departmental use. - Serves on university committees including the Curriculum Committee, Recruitment Committee and Awards Committee.
Secondary Functions - Assists with coordinating yearly GIST (Girls in Science and Technology) camp. - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of computer software used in CSCI 1510. - Ability to supervise and schedule graduate student assistants and adjunct faculty. - Ability to communicate effectively. - Ability to maintain advisement system. - Ability to monitor faculty advisement work load. - Knowledge of departmental curriculum requirements and policies. - Knowledge of university policies and procedures. - Knowledge of registration, academic advisement, articulation agreements and student retention programs.
Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.
Minimum Qualifications Master's degree required; knowledge of computer science, counseling and advising; and experience in higher education and counseling and advising preferred.
