Function of Position
Responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic
Affairs for promoting honors-distinctive academic, creative, and enrichment
opportunities for undergraduate students in all academic programs at the
university. Particular emphasis
includes planning, development, and advancement of honors curricula and
programs, undergraduate research programs, and programs that enhance
international education and experiential opportunities for students and faculty;
programs to enhance innovation in teaching and mentoring by faculty; and
activities, events, and programs designed to enhance the collective cultural and
intellectual environment and foster a more global perspective within the
university community.
Essential Functions
- Provides leadership for planning and development of programs, curricula and extra-curricular activities that constitute honors, international educational, and undergraduate research opportunities.
- Ensures that the academic quality of honors programs and honors graduates is sustained.
- Seeks, promotes, and designs partnerships with international higher education institutions.
- Assures the quality, safety, and feasibility of international exchange and study abroad opportunities for students and faculty.
- Provides oversight for programs and services provided to international students and visiting faculty.
- Coordinates development and management of institutional activities designed to enhance undergraduate research and creative activities.
- Designs and encourages participation in programs and opportunities designed to support innovative pedagogy and teaching by faculty.
- Seeks, promotes, and designs events that enhance the cultural and intellectual environment of the campus and region.
- Promotes activities to recruit and retain a diverse population of highly qualified students and faculty on campus.
- Forms business and community partnerships that support and sustain honors, undergraduate research, and international educational programs, activities, and events.
Secondary Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of academic program development and university governance.
- Knowledge of TBR and THEC policies.
- Knowledge of academic policies, curricular issues, and best practices regarding honors education.
- Knowledge of international higher education systems.
- Knowledge of current national issues, trends, and best practices in undergraduate research programs.
- Knowledge of assessment methods, procedures, and management.
- Ability to manage budgets effectively.
- Ability to design, organize and effectively manage complex programs.
- Ability to analyze and interpret long-range implications and consequences of issues related to academic and co-curricular programs and to international partnerships.
- Ability to promote student success and faculty excellence.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with professional and administrative staff, students and their families, members of the regional community, granting agencies, and representatives of overseas universities.
- Ability to work cooperatively with academic administrators in policy and program development and analyses.
- Ability to contribute initiative and originality to problem resolution.
- Ability to provide leadership and to make sound decisions.
Supervision Given and Received
Initiates broad programs under general direction working
from broad objectives and requiring interpretation and analysis to judge
long-range implications and consequences.
Supervises administrative heads of Honors programs, Office of
Undergraduate Research, and Office of International Programs and Services.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned terminal degree in appropriate discipline with a minimum of five years
college teaching experience; five years experience in administration; evidence
of scholarly activity; and previous administrative experience in honors
educational programming.
