Function of Position

 

Responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for managing the operations of the College of Business and Technology.  Operations of the College within the purview of the Dean include:  development of the triennial strategic plan; negotiation of the annual budgets; oversight of college and department spending; review of personnel appraisals and decisions; outreach to the civic and professional communities; cultivation of donor relations; conceptualization of new curricula and methods of delivery to the market place; and oversight of accreditation activities.

 

Essential Functions

 

-          Facilitates College strategic planning and budgeting processes, working with department chairs, associate/assistant deans, program directors and Provost.

-          Reviews College and department spending decisions in the context of approved budget.

-          Reviews hiring, promotion and tenure decisions in light of department, College, University and Tennessee Board of Regents criteria.

-          Works collaboratively with partners at Tennessee Board Regents institutions to develop articulation agreements, deliver upper level course work on partner campuses, and design shared programs that leverage faculty expertise and resources.

-          Represents the College in the civic, academic and professional communities.

-          Oversees accreditation processes and visits.

-          Partners with University Advancement to maintain and cultivate donor relations.

-          Works with associate deans and department chairs to identify and develop new curricula and delivery systems that address the needs of College’s audiences.

-          Manages governance processes within the College, including by not limited to Administrative Council, College Faculty Meetings, and Strategic Planning Committee.

-          Collaborates with college deans, and Academic Affairs staff members to support University-level initiatives.

-          Serves on Deans’ Council, Academic Council and President’s Council.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

-          Knowledge of academic processes as they pertain to the management of a College and the development/modification of curricula and programs.

-          Knowledge of TBR and THEC policies and procedures.

-          Knowledge of SACS and discipline accreditation procedures and processes.

-          Knowledge of the Faculty Handbook and other University governance documents.

-          Ability to communicate effectively among various College and University constituencies.

-          Ability to plan and execute College initiatives and priorities.

-          Ability to make sound decisions, considering long and short term results.

-          Ability to prepare and present ideas, both orally and in writing.

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Initiates broad programs under general direction, working from policies and general objectives. Supervises administrative heads of the College of Business and Technology.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Earned terminal degree in appropriate discipline with a minimum of five years college teaching experience; five years experience in administration; and evidence of scholarly activity.
