Function of Position:
Responsible to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for
providing leadership and management for the Claudius G. Clemmer College of
Education which includes the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction,
Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, Human Development and Learning, and
Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences; the University School; The Center of
Excellence in Early Childhood Learning and Development which includes the Child
Study Center and Little Bucs. The
Center of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education is jointly
administered by the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education.
Essential
Functions:

Provides leadership is developing an academic vision and plan for the
college that is consistent with the College and University missions and
strategic initiatives and ensures
continuing attention to that vision and plan
-
Provides academic and educational leadership for the college and for its
administrators, faculty, staff, and students
-
Promotes and provides leadership in teacher education at the campus, state,
and national level
-
Foster a culture that is supportive of the University’s espoused values
-
Serves as the chief operating officer for the college with overall
responsibility for instructional, research, and service programs; curriculum
and program development; faculty and staff employment, development, and
evaluation; student support services; allocation of available financial,
space, and other resources to support the college mission; fundraising from
public and private sources; and all other aspects of college operations
-
Chairs the college’s Chairs Council and Administrative Team and coordinates
and supports the work of other college administrators, including department
chairs, associate dean, and directors and coordinators in the college
-
Provides support for the University’s Teacher Education Advisory Council
-
Represents the college and provides leadership in its dealings with other
units on campus, ETSU General Administration, Tennessee Board of Education
and Department of Education, local school districts, national associations
and accrediting agencies, and other external organizations
-
Communicates systematically and helpfully about College affairs with
faculty, students, campus colleagues, alumni, colleagues in schools and
related agencies, state and national agencies, and others off campus

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of general academic policies and curriculum issues
-
Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents policies and procedures and
Tennessee Department of Education policies and procedures for operation of a
K-12 school
-
Knowledge of NCATE and other appropriate accreditation policies

Ability to engage in constructive problem-solving and to make sound
decisions

Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff within the college
and university and diverse campus and community constituencies
-
Ability to work collaboratively with the leadership of other academic and
administrative units to develop appropriate policies and/or programs
-
Ability to promote student success and faculty excellence in teaching,
scholarship, and service
Supervision Given and
Received:
Supervises department chairs in the college (including
Director of University School), Directors of the College’s two Centers of
Excellence, as well as the
professional staff of the dean’s office.
Is, in turn, supervised by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned terminal degree and qualifications of a tenured full
professor, including a record of distinction in university teaching and research
or creative activity; at least five years successful experience in academic
administration at the level of department chair or above.
