Function of Position

 

Responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for overseeing all processes relating to graduate education at ETSU including recruitment, applications, admissions, student matriculation and graduation, graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships; facilitating and supporting development of new graduate programs and graduate curricula; promoting the university's instructional mission as it relates to graduate education; providing representation of graduate education for the university’s strategic planning; and performing other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

 

-          Oversees graduate student applications and admissions as well as monitoring student matriculation; certifies graduate student graduation.

-          Oversees graduate student record and file management.

-          Provides oversight and management of graduate assistantship and graduate tuition scholarship contracts; graduate school certifies student eligibility in accordance with best practices and policies and acts as liaison between contracting units, human resources, financial aid, and other offices as required.

-          Promotes the participation and retention of a diverse population in graduate education and related activities.

-          Provides oversight and leadership for graduate school sponsored efforts toward recruitment for all graduate degree and certificate programs.

-          Facilitates and supports development of new graduate degree and certificate programs.

-          Facilitates the university Graduate Council in review of proposals for new graduate programs and courses, review of applications for graduate faculty status, and establishment and review of policies in accordance with peer standards, state policies, and best practices in graduate education (e.g., SACS, TBR, CGS)

-          Oversees the electronic thesis and dissertation publication process; provides final approval of all graduate theses and dissertations.

-          Oversees development of programs to promote professional development of graduate students including the Graduate Student Thesis and Dissertation Research Grant Program and the Outstanding Thesis, Dissertation, and Capstone Experience Award program sponsored by the School of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Council.

-          Provides leadership in developing aspects of strategic planning with regard to graduate education.

-          Works collaboratively with graduate program coordinators, department chairs, other deans, directors, and vice presidents on projects related to graduate education.

-          Participates as appropriate in accreditation and other reviews of graduate programs.

-          Oversees appeals processes involving graduate students, including grade appeals and allegations of misconduct.

-          Knowledge of academic areas especially as related to graduate education.

-          Knowledge of graduate school, university, and Tennessee Board of Regents policies and procedures.

-          Knowledge of standards of best practice and emerging issues in graduate education.

-          Ability to communicate effectively.

-          Ability to critically analyze information and to formulate reports, recommendations, and policies.

-          Ability to lead and to make thoughtful decisions.

-          Ability to interact with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the public.

-          Ability to provide initiative and creativity in solving problems.

-          Ability to work with budgets.

 

Supervision Given and Received

Initiates broad programs under general direction, working from policies and general objectives. Supervises administrative heads of the School of Graduate Studies. 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Earned terminal degree in appropriate discipline with a minimum of five years college teaching experience; five years experience in administration; and evidence of scholarly activity.
