Function of Position

Responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for the fiscal and personnel management of the Division of Student Affairs including providing executive leadership and a vision which is consistent with the educational mission and values of the university; working in collaboration with students, faculty and staff to intentionally create conditions that support and enhance student learning and personal development; executing shared governance, teamwork and partnerships between the Division of Student Affairs and other units of the university; serving as primary advocate for students; leading continuous improvement efforts to enhance the quality of co-curricular life and promote cultural diversity; providing administrative supervision for all Student Affairs departments as well as related services and educational programs; and performing other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

-        Provides supervision and management of the Division of Student Affairs.

-        Coordinates preparation of Student Affairs’ Division and departmental budgets including providing budgetary oversight.

-        Formulates university and division policies and procedures concerning students.

-        Administers allocation process for funding student activities.

-        Coordinates long-range planning for the Division of Student Affairs.

-       Provides direct line supervision for Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, Vice President/Dean of Students and Directors of Campus Recreation, Counseling Center,   Student Publications, Housing and Residence Life, University Center, Career and Internship Services, and the Office of Community Engagement, Learning and Leadership.

-        Represents the Division of Student Affairs on numerous university committees and councils.

-        Chairs the Technology Access Fee Advisory Committee.

-        Counsels and advises students.

-        Provides professional development opportunities.

 

Secondary Functions

-        Acts on tuition and housing appeals.

-        Monitors admission of convicted felons.

-        Suspends or expels students experiencing significant behavioral difficulties.

-        Edits Student Handbook and student affairs portions of catalogues.

-        Manages confidential files and release of privileged educational records.

-        Provides student references and letters of recommendation.

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

-        Knowledge of student development theory and practice.

-        Knowledge of budget planning and oversight.

-        Knowledge of student activities administration.

-        Knowledge of research methodology.

-        Knowledge of personnel development techniques.

-        Knowledge of student discipline and campus judicial systems.

-        Ability to supervise and train employees of lower classification.

-        Ability to counsel university level students.

-        Ability to plan and develop services and programs for adult and commuting students.

-        Ability to formulate and write long range plans and develop policies affecting students.

-        Ability to effectively communicate with students and faculty.

-        Ability to manage complex budgets.

 

Supervision Given and Received

Has broad discretionary authority to implement general objectives and devise specific means for their achievement.  Supervises administrative and support staff employees.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate degree in higher education, student personnel administration or related area of concentration required; five years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs.
