Function of Position

Responsible to the University President for a broad and complex set of assignments related to the duties of the University President; provides administrative support for all presidential activities acting on behalf of the President and the university in a manner that reflects the President's priorities and the university's mission, goals and values; demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement and to providing outstanding service to a variety of university stake holders; maintaining an overall standard of excellence for the staff in the Office of the President and for managing the personnel, fiscal and other operations of the office; supervising administrative and classified employees; and performing other related duties as assigned.  As Associate Vice President for Health Affairs, the position is responsible for providing administrative support to the Division of Health Sciences and is responsible to the Vice President for Health Affairs.

Essential Functions (Executive Assistant to the President)

- Assists the President in providing leadership that fosters mutual respect and esteem among all constituencies of the university.

- Serves as advisor to the President and member of the President's Staff and President's Council.

- Anticipates problems, critical issues, and opportunities as they arise and advises the President accordingly.

- Directs the work of the office based on the needs and requirements of the President in relationship to the constituencies he serves.

- Reviews all communications coming to the President, and, where appropriate, summarizes, prepares responses and/or redirects to the appropriate university officials.

- Serves as liaison to members of the administration, faculty, staff and the Tennessee Board of Regents.

- Works with university leadership, external constituents, faculty and staff to resolve problems addressed to the President.

- Handles sensitive issues that require confidentiality.

- Plans, manages, and directs the business of the Office of the President including personnel, operations, and budget.

- Supervises administrative and classified employees.

- Coordinates presidential initiatives and special assignments.

- Reviews all student, staff, and faculty appeals to the President and makes recommendations.

- Plans the President's Council annual retreat and other special events.

Essential Functions (Associate Vice President for Health Affairs)

- Assists the Vice President for Health Affairs in executing the mission and goals of the Division of Health Sciences.

- Guides and coordinates the Planning and Institutional Effectiveness component of the Health Sciences Colleges.

- Serves as advisor to the Vice President concerning critical issues, opportunities, and challenges as they arise.

- Represents the Vice President as needed on various committees and at other official functions.

- Serves as liaison to the Health Sciences deans, faculty, staff, and students.

Secondary Functions

- Exercises signature authority for the President and Vice President for Health Affairs when appropriate.

- Represents the President and Vice President for Health Affairs at special organization events as required.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree required, doctorate preferred; must provide evidence of related professional and management experience.
