Function of Position

 

The Learning Specialist reports to the Director of Academic Services.  The Learning Specialist is assigned a caseload of student-athletes and the primary responsibility is to design and implement academic support plans for the under-prepared and learning challenged student-athletes assigned to the Learning Specialist.  Collaborates with several academic counselors, faculty, the Office of Disability Services and coaches to enhance the academic success of assigned student-athletes. 

 

Essential Functions

 

-    Designs and implements academic support plans for the under-prepared and learning challenged student–athlete.

-    Collaborates with faculty and other departments to provide effective academic support services.

-    Develops academic skill training sessions for all athletes.

-    Works collaboratively with academic counselors, faculty, the Office of Disability Services and coaches to enhance the academic success of assigned student-athletes.

-    Determines frequency and type of intervention

 

 

 

 

 

 

Secondary Functions

 

-        Assists with oversight of academic services department, including hiring, payroll, training and supervision of tutors and mentors.

-        Assists with progress reports, special events, career workshops, etc.

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

-    Knowledge and experience working with a culturally diverse population.

-    Knowledge of NCAA Rules.

-    Ability to communicate effectively.

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Performs under general supervision.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree in related field required; master’s degree preferred.  One year experience in collegiate athletics and experience in advising, counseling or experience in an educational setting.
