Function of Position

Responsible to the Director, Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the museum; overseeing exhibits, displays, facility, fiscal matters, resource development, community outreach, educational programs, research, marketing; coordinating tours and making presentations; supervising administrative and classified employees; and performing other related duties as assigned. 

Essential Functions 

-Oversees museum fiscal matters; prepares annual budget and action plans; determines and approves expenditures; establishes priorities for spending.

-Directs facility use; oversees safety and security; develops facility policies and fee structures; ensures maintenance of the facility.

-Supervises museum employees.

-Develops and secures outside funding sources through grants, donations, and formal fund development in collaboration with the development office.

-Serves as museum liaison for the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services.

-Serves as official liaison to Friends of the Reece Museum (FORM).

-Works in conjunction with the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services and university mission outreach, consultation and community collaboration.

-Educates through tours, public speaking, formal teaching, research, and publishing.

-Reviews and recommends museum exhibits as part of an overall educational program; implements execution of exhibits.

-Researches and oversees collection and exhibit documentation.

-Develops marketing and public relations plans.

-Designs and oversees installation of exhibits in galleries.

-Establishes and maintains network of artists, craftsmen, collectors, and performers as potential exhibitors.

-Serves as museum liaison to local and regional art and historical groups and as official spokesperson to the media.

-Surveys museum operations to ensure standards of museum accreditation are maintained.

-Conducts staff meetings regularly.

-Attends workshops, conferences, and seminars; presents professional papers. 

Secondary Functions 

-Co-hosts with museum staff, receptions and other museum sponsored events.

-Serves as liaison to the departments of art and design and history.

-Serves on university committees.

-Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Knowledge and Abilities 

-Knowledge of art media.

-Knowledge of museum standards and practices.

-Knowledge of exhibit installation.

-Knowledge of the history of the community, region, and state.

-Knowledge of fiscal management.

-Knowledge of facility management.

-Knowledge of computers and word processing.

-Knowledge of the role of a museum on a college campus.

-Knowledge of resource development.

-Ability to communicate effectively.

-Ability to function independently. 

Supervision Given and Received 

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.  Supervises administrative and classified employees. 

Minimum Qualifications 

Master's degree in art, art history, art education, museum studies, history or related field required; five years experience in museum operations.
