Function of Position

Responsible to the Director for providing in-person, telephone, mail, e-mail and Internet reference service to the archives collection for students, faculty, staff and the general public; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Processes manuscript collections.

- Supervises student workers.

- Conducts departmental tours.

- Gives presentations about the department to both campus and off-campus groups and organizations.

- Informs faculty of useful research collections in their fields.

- Develops and produces departmental brochures, guides, subject bibliographies, indexes, and other publications enhancing access to collections.

- Plans, researches, creates and arranges display case exhibits.

- Serves as editor of the Center newsletter, News CASS; writes, edits and performs layout of articles and photographs.

- Assists with special projects.

Secondary Functions

- Writes grants.

- Conducts research and publishes material on Appalachian studies, local, Tennessee and regional history.

- Provides news releases to campus and off-campus media regarding services and activities of the archives.

- Keeps informed on material on southern Appalachia and ETSU for possible additions to the archives.

- Assists director with donor contracts.

- Maintains ETSU administrative and faculty register.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of modern archival practice and archival conservation techniques.

- Knowledge of computers and related software.

- Knowledge of modern editorial practices.

- Knowledge of research methodology.

- Ability to work independently.

- Ability to work closely with the public.

- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in library science (ALA accredited school), history, Appalachian Studies or a related field with graduate training and professional experience in archives; two years experience as a professional archivist required.
