Position Title: Nursing Supervisor

Function of Position

Responsible to the Project Director for supervising nursing staff and functioning as a health care member; providing nursing service; maintaining collaborative relationships with the public school system; providing education for patients, staff and health science students; acting as liaison between nursing staff and director, nurse practitioners, and office staff; hiring nursing personnel and ensuring adequate coverage for patient care; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

-Provides leadership to clinical and office staff.

-Serves as a member of the health care team.

-Supervises, counsels, and assists with evaluating the performance of the nursing staff.

-Provides nursing care and assists nurse practitioner with patient care.

-Evaluates and provides nursing assessment of health problems of students presenting to the Hancock County School-Based Health Centers to determine appropriate level of care needed.

-Provides treatment for selected health problems using nursing protocol.

-Documents assessment and care in health record.

-Refers patients needing care by nurse practitioner; assists with scheduling appointments as needed.

-Assists nurse practitioner with examinations, procedures, dispensing medications and patient teaching.

-Assists with patient follow-up, contacts patients about finding of laboratory and other investigations, need for additional care, etc.

-Administers injections, including immunizations and ensures appropriate patient screening, teaching and observation following injection.

-Counsels patients regarding health risks, health problems, treatment options, and appropriate use of health care system.

-Provides appropriate first aid and life support to patients undergoing medical emergency.

-Performs non-complex physical examinations required; refers to nurse practitioner/ physician when abnormal findings are noted.

-Plans, implements, and evaluates health promotion risk reduction programs for students.

-Schedules and documents work time of all nursing and office staff; maintains adequate staffing.

-Maintains familiarity with applicable health and safety regulations and ensures compliance.

-Identifies problems associated with clinical practice and undertakes resolution, in collaboration with the director and staff.

-Supports the learning and practice of students of the College of Nursing and other departments of the Division of Health Sciences.

-Coordinates scheduling, orientation, instruction and supervision of nursing and other health sciences students assigned to the school-based centers.

-Studies, amends, and develops or assists with nursing policies and procedures.

-Facilitates provision of appropriate patient and health education activities, including presentations at outreach programs.

-Assists with maintaining inventories and initiating the order of supplies and equipment for the clinic with appropriate approval.

-Ensures clinical equipment is maintained in safe working order.

-Serves as nursing liaison to director on strategic and planning efforts; represents interests of nursing staff in the development of departmental policies/procedures.

-Provides for adequate orientation and training of clinical staff to familiarize them with Hancock County School-Based Health Center.

-Represents the school-based centers on community boards and committees relevant to the health needs and services of the school population.

-Attends, leads and/or contributes to Hancock County School-Based Health Center meetings and inservice programs.

-Assists with data generation and analysis; writes reports.

Knowledge and Abilities

-Knowledge of current nursing procedures and procedural requirements of the university and various regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, Tennessee Board of Pharmacy).

-Knowledge of health sciences and nursing procedures as practiced in school health and in clinic settings.

-Knowledge of health assessment and counseling.

-Ability to function independently.

-Ability to analyze, revise and develop nursing policies and procedures.

-Ability to assist with review and revision of health center policies.

-Ability to communicate effectively.

-Ability to effectively supervise nursing staff and handle administrative problems, including the resolution of conflicts.

-Ability to coordinate, analyze and evaluate data and prepare reports.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.  Supervises administrative and classified employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in nursing; three years experience in an ambulatory setting; two years experience in supervision of nursing staff; licensed as a Registered Nurse.
