Function of Position

Responsible to the Chair for carrying out and supervising all aspects of a multi-functional chlamydia research program involving advanced molecular biology techniques, quantitative RT-PCR, proteomics, advanced HPLC, state-of-the-art immunology signaling assays, animal manipulation, and both bacterial and eukaryotic genetics and cellular biology; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

-Generates research data in line with the 11 specific grant aims, using advanced technology in microbiology, chemistry, cell biology and immunology.

-Supervises via multi-tasking the research projects of technicians, graduate students, medical students and residents.

-Assists with research experiments for postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists.

-Assists with grant and manuscript writing, and  preparation of data for oral presentations and meetings.

-Teaches techniques to all laboratory personnel.

-Supervises the experiments for all collaborative research experiments.

-Trouble-shoots problems within the laboratory.

Secondary Functions

-Oversees the smooth, stable running of the laboratory.

-Supervises technicians in growing chlamydiae stocks and maintaining mammalian tissue culture lines.

-Orders supplies and maintains all equipment.

-Maintains laboratory safety, and prepares all administrative forms for compliance, i.e., radiation, IRB, animal, OHSA, and bio hazard, etc.

-Maintains current knowledge of new technical developments and pertinent literature specific to research areas.

-Maintains special records for freezer chlamydiae stocks and antibodies.

-Monitors supply expenditures.

-Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

-Knowledge of and experience with prokaryotic and eukaryotic research.

-Knowledge of and experience with advanced technology skills in eight scientific areas.

-Knowledge of and experience with teaching and authorship experience.

-Ability to perform multi-task activities.

-Ability to supervise employees of a lower classification.

-Ability to work with senior visiting scientists/physician collaborators.

-Ability to prepare grants and manuscripts.

-Ability to maintain complex laboratory equipment, maintain laboratory safety, and operate the laboratory as a major research enterprise.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.  Supervises the research projects of technicians, graduate students, medical students and residents.

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. degree required, in microbiology, chemistry or biology; M.S. degree and 15-20 years research experience preferred.
