Function of Position

Responsible to the Chair for the administration of activities necessary for planning, implementing and managing all the Chair's activities; managing six programs including the Osteoporosis Program, Physical Exercise Program, Health Services Utilization Program, Aging Process Program, Dementia/Psychogeriatrics Program, and the Basic Science Laboratory Research Program; overseeing program budgets; serving as liaison between the College of Medicine, VA, ETSU, MEAC and the Osteoporosis Center; developing continuing medical education seminars; integrating quality improvement into operations; performing human resource duties; functioning as chief operating officer for the Osteoporosis Center; expanding and promoting activities of the Chair; representing the Chair at various meetings; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Provides leadership in formulation of alliances with other corporate partners.

- Develops and implements strategic plan for operations.

- Analyzes present activities and works to expand programs.

- Oversees budgeting process (MEAC and ETSU).

- Represents center through local Chamber of Commerce activities.

- Ensures that organization activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state and federal regulations, including HCFA regulations.

- Works closely with community resources to acquire volunteers.

- Creates venues for mobile unit to generate referrals for services.

- Participates in Tennessee Osteoporosis Advisory Board and Southeast Osteoporosis Board.

- Coordinates promotional activities such as "Healthy Bone Group" meetings, media exposure, facility tours and participation in community activities.

- Collaborates with university development for public relations activities.

- Develops health fairs for the public including screening for osteoporosis.

- Collaborates with Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public and Allied Health and Business along with local high schools to ensure student participation in center activities.

- Develops and coordinates continuing medical education seminars.

- Oversees quality assurance activities.

- Develops needs assessments and evaluations of programs.

- Gathers support from pharmaceutical companies to provide educational opportunities for the community.

- Arranges educational activities in conjunction with local hospitals and community agencies such as Senior Citizens and Senior Partners.

- Contacts pharmaceutical companies and acts as contact person to recruit and conduct clinical studies.

- Assists in development of new research projects; assists with research studies as needed.

- Explores possible sources of funding for research activities.

- Explores potential research with physical therapy department and the Nave Center.

- Monitors various research budgets.

Secondary Functions

- Facilitates flow of data toward publication; assists with editing of research publications.

- Serves on various local committees and boards.

- Develops brochures, flyers, and other promotional materials.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of the local health care market.

- Knowledge of management, marketing and accounting principles and procedures.

- Knowledge of computers and various software packages.

- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.

- Ability to function independently.

- Ability to work well with community agencies.

- Ability to coordinate pharmaceutical company sponsored research projects.

- Ability to work with older adults.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Supervises administrative and classified employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in nursing; a master's degree in business administration required; ten years experience in the field of business, with some experience in the human resources area, teaching at the collegiate level, working with financial reports, working in the health care industry and/or coordinating pharmaceutical companies sponsored studies.
