Function of Position
Visual Resources Curator manages and develops visual resources collection of
slides and digital images. The
curator is responsible for the overall management of the collection of
approximately 100,000 slides and 60,000+ digital images.
The curator will also play a central role in the eventual conversion of
the collection to digital format.
Duties include the production, acquisition, cataloging, circulation,
conservation, and maintenance of the collection in support of the undergraduate
and graduate program in the Department of Art and Design.
The curator is also responsible for the supervision of personnel hiring,
training and devaluation of five student workers.
The curator will facilitate faculty and student use and production of
visual resources for teaching, learning and scholarship.
The collection supports an art and art history faculty, adjunct faculty
and graduate and undergraduate students, as well as a limited number of faculty
from other departments.
Essential Functions

Manages and upkeeps the electronic database – MDID (Madison Digital Image
Database) to catalogue the collection.
Duties include the production, cataloging,
circulation, conservation, and maintenance of the collection.

Manages and maintains the collection of just over 100,000 slides and
60,000+ digital
images.

Facilitates faculty and student use and production of visual resources
for teaching,
learning and scholarship.

Supervises personnel, hiring, training and evaluation of student workers.

Manages and maintains over $350,000 of existing visual resources
equipment and
orders new equipment.
Secondary Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
-
Knowledge of art history.

Knowledge of visual resources cataloging practices.

Ability to use photographic slide production, digital imaging technology
(especially Adobe PhotoShop) and relational databases (currently, the department
uses MDID (Madison Digital Image Database) to catalogue the collection).

Knowledge of interpersonal skills.

Ability to work well with faculty, staff and students.
Supervision Given and Received
Performs under general supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Art or Art History or related field; Master’s degree
preferred; minimum three years of relevant work experience.
