The primary responsibility of the Lead Interpreter position is to provide
quality interpreting and support services for the deaf and hearing impaired
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
- Interviews and screens sign language interpreters.
- Keeps a file on qualified/certified interpreters.
- Screens deaf and hearing impaired students for appropriate interpreters.
- Assigns interpreters to classes and/or events.
- Interprets classroom and lab lectures for deaf and hearing impaired students.
- Interprets special events for deaf and hearing impaired students, faculty and staff.
- Interprets campus meetings for deaf and hearing impaired faculty and staff.
- Coordinates scheduling of interpreters.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Basic knowledge of sign languages, such as American Sign Language (ASL) and Pidgen Signed English (PSE).
- Basic knowledge of technical signs pertaining to the course of study.
- Basic knowledge of deafness, deaf culture, deaf language, and the deaf community.
- Basic knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of ethics.
- Basic proficiency in English, i.e., vocabulary, spelling, grammar, reading, writing and literature.
- Ability to match interpreters with students for optimum result.
- Ability to orally interpret simultaneously with PSE.
- Ability to interpret for multi-handicapped deaf students, including
those with visual impairments.
Graduation from a standard high school or GED; associate degree from
an accredited interpreter training program; possession of certification
from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); three years of full-time
