DEFINITION

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in campus security, protecting property, facilities, citizens, staff and students, coordinating activity with the law enforcement officers and performing other work as required.
 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

- Patrols, by foot or motor vehicle.

- Observes and reports accidents or activities of a questionable/suspicious nature.

- Reports accidents involving persons or property; reporting probable cause of accidents, and pursues appropriate course of action, informing proper authorities as required.

- Directs and controls traffic.

- Testifies in court or legal proceedings as required.

- Issues parking tickets.

- Operates and maintains security equipment.

- Keeps records and makes reports.

- Performs other work as assigned.
 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

- Knowledge of campus policies.

- Knowledge of effective security methods.

- Knowledge of the geographic area of the campus.

- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.

- Ability to ascertain facts through personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.

- Ability to perform duties firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.

- Ability to operate/learn to operate security equipment necessary in the performance of required duties.

- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with students, the public and other employees.
 

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation conducted by the employing agency. Graduation from a standard high school, or possess equivalency.

Be at least 18 years of age. Experience in security work. Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances and not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States. Possession of a valid Tennessee operator license as issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
