Description

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biological Informatics to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in developing and using computational, statistical, and other tools in the collection, organization, dissemination, and use of information to solve problems in biology. The research and training plan of each fellowship is expected to address important scientific questions in contemporary biology and include a strong linkage between computer, information, and computational science and biology and develop and/or apply state-of-the-art informatics tools or approaches to the stated problem. Fellows who accept a tenure-track position following the fellowship may apply for research starter grants.

Dear Colleagues,

Three new funding opportunities are available for research and training at the interface of the biological sciences and the mathematical/statistical sciences.

Research opportunity 1: New Mathematical and Statistical Tools for Understanding Complex Systems in the Environment. The deadline for this competition is 7 April 2004. Details can be found in: Mathematical Sciences: Innovations at the Interface with the

Sciences and Engineering (NSF 04-538), found at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2004/nsf04538/nsf04538.pdf.

Research opportunity 2: Joint DMS/BIO/NIGMS Initiative to Support Research in the Area of Mathematical Biology. The dealine for this competition is 30 June 2004. The program announcement can be found at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2002/nsf02125/nsf02125.pdf. Note that the announcement has not yet been updated to indicate the participation by the BIO Directorate at NSF. All NSF-relevant biology is eligible for this competition. Ignore the language limiting the competition to only NIGMS-relevant biology.

Training opportunity: Interdisciplinary Training for Undergraduates in Biological and Mathematical Sciences (UBM). The dealine for this competition is 30 June 2004. The program announcement can be found at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2004/nsf04546/nsf04546.pdf.

Please inform interested colleagues about these new opportunities as soon as possible.

The solicitation NSF 04-538 also contains information about other activities related to the Mathematical Sciences Priority Area (MSPA).  These include activities covered by existing target dates or deadlines previously announced for FY 2004, activities covered by separate solicitations, and competitions whose announcement is expected in the next few months.  See the full text of NSF 04-538 and the separate solicitations for detailed

information.
