HISTORY OF THE PROJECT

The Rural Appalachian Cancer Demonstration Program (RACDP) was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through a Congressional appropriation beginning in 2001. The program represented a partnership between the East Tennessee State University’s Division of Health Sciences, the LENOWISCO District of the Virginia Department of Health, and the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center. The aim of the Program was to explore, identify, document and describe cancer health disparities in the three state Central Appalachian region. In doing so, twenty different studies were conducted. The reports and products from these studies can be found by clicking on the program report links below. Each study resulted in findings. Taken collectively as reported in the following pages, a picture of cancer in the region emerges that point to disparities in risks, processes of care and outcomes.
