20.1 Health Disparities in Appalachia (to the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research) a) There is evidence of health disparities in Appalachia. b) A disturbing pattern of very high mortality rates among counties in Central Appalachia occurs for multiple causes of death. White and Black Appalachians have higher rates than the nation. Appalachia also has a premature mortality disparity (death before age 65) compared to national data. c) A disproportionately high percentage of Appalachian counties are among the worst 10% of mortality counties in US.

20.2 Health Disparities in Southwest VA and Northeast TN (multiple audiences) a) Central Appalachia as health disparity region for cervical cancer (National Cancer Institute). b) High cervical cancer mortality counties associated with ARC economic distressed county status. c) Death rates for all cancers in rural Appalachia significantly higher than U.S. rate. Lung cancer significantly higher in rural and all Appalachia. Colorectal cancer death rate was significantly higher. d) Disparities vary in regards to gender and race in the Appalachian region. e) What messages work better to improve health in Appalachia?

20.3 Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice (multiple audiences) a) The intent of this presentation is to describe and document the 13 state Appalachian region as a place-based, geographic health disparity population. b) All Cancers and Lung Cancer death rates higher in Appalachia and rural Appalachia than US. c) A disproportionately high percentage of Appalachian counties are among the worst 10% of mortality counties in US. d) A disturbing pattern of very high mortality rates among counties in Central Appalachia occurs for multiple causes of death.
