Class Overview
Upon entering the computer lab, each participant has the advantage of completing 4 computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access). They are also able to learn Keyboarding and Internet. All computer applications consist of Basic, Intermediate and Advance. There are ideal time frames for each of the applications to be finished. Following is a list of these time frames:
Each computer application is actual hands on work. The books used have Skills Review and
Visual Workshops that must also be done in class and turned in along with
work throughout the chapters. These
are reviewed for accuracy and possible problems that may need to
be Ideal time frames for completion of all components is 18
weeks for a 40-hour participant and 36 weeks for a 20-hour
participant. These time frames could
vary depending on absenteeism and skill level. A
certificate is awarded to each participant for each discipline
completed. At this point one may
obtain up to 4 certificates. A bonus is given after all 4 applications
(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) are
completed. The computer lab is open from 8:00 to 4:30, Monday thru
Friday. Participants, who are 40
hours, may take lunch between 12:00 and 1:00.The hours for 40-hour students are 8:00
to 4:00 or 8:30 to 4:30.The hours
for 20-hour students are 8:00 to 12:00 or 12:30 to 4:30. They may also
have two 15-minute breaks at 10:00 and 2:00.All participants must clock in and out,
and also clock in and out for lunch. They are asked to call in by 9:00am if
not attending, and are required to bring an excuse for any time
missed. If a participant needs to
change their schedule in any way (change lunch break, leave early, outside
appointments, etc.), they are asked to give the instructor one day notice
prior to schedule change or no later than 9:00am the same day. All participants are asked to notify the
instructor before leaving the computer lab for any reason other
than scheduled break times. We are working toward an atmosphere as close to a workplace
as possible. This way, participants
will be use to time constraints, rules, responsibility, and work
accuracy. Since it would not be
possible to take a child with you to most places of employment, back-up
childcare plans must be made. We
will also be developing teamwork and interoffice social skills. A job shadowing activity will be added
for basic clerical skills, utilizing the support staff of the ETSU
Community Partnership Center. Cell
phones are not allowed in
