Drug Intervention Gives Independence
ETSU Community Partnership Center encompasses a number of programs that provide intensive treatment and preventive services to at-risk children, adolescents, and their families in the communities in which they reside. One of these programs is DIGiLAB. DIGiLAB (Drug Intervention Gives Independence) is an exciting new youth technology initiative and prevention model that builds youth protective factors by teaching skills that facilitate youth-led solutions to community problems. It is designed to give youth ages 9-14 opportunity and experience with digital cameras, computers, and various software programs. It also encourages discernment, choice making, aesthetic awareness, documentation and production of materials based on student interest. This unique project is possible through partnerships involving Johnson City Parks and Recreation, Johnson City Housing Authority and ETSU Community Partnership Center. DIGiLAB meets weekly for two-hour sessions. Each meeting format involves students in hands-on interactive, cooperative games to build communication skills and develop positive peer relationships. A meeting agenda is posted and reviewed, allowing for student input and to increase awareness of both personal and collective responsibility for progress and goal achievement. Individual and teamwork is encouraged as students learn the use of equipment, pursue interests (sports, local and regional places of interest, interviews, etc.), and prepare displays that document their work.
Documentation projects (photographs, display panels, info sessions, etc.) encourage community awareness and participation. DIGiLAB develops skills. It involves children in meaningful work that engages both cognitive and artistic sensibilities as well as relationships that require thoughtful interactions. In doing so, DIGiLAB helps impart character development, self-esteem and community involvement, all of which aid in drug prevention and personal responsibility. DIGiLAB generates enthusiasm, artistic expression and industrious participation.
