Who We Are

We are 4th through 7th grade students at North Side Elementary and Indian Trail Middle School in Johnson City, Tennessee. We are taking part in a mentoring program funded through a grant by the Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools initiative and administered through East Tennessee State University's Center for Community Outreach and Family Services.

What We're Doing
Throughout the 2005 school year we will be concentrating on two major things:

* What we want to be in life.
* How we will accomplish that goal.

To help us answer these important questions we will be doing some FUN and EDUCATIONAL activities:

* Meeting with service learning students from the local university to help us with academics so we can build the foundations we will need later on for a career doing something we love and that is beneficial to others.

* Meeting with mentors from our immediate community to find out how area professionals made their dreams come true.

* Job-shadowing people who already have careers doing the things we want to do when we get older.

* Going on field trips to local businesses and places that help prepare young people for the world of work.

* Getting hands-on experience with digital video technology by using camcorders to create our own artistic works.

* Using a professional broadcasting studio to produce short, television-quality shows and radio programming.

* Learning how all the components of a PC work together---and then building our own custom computer from scratch.
