Communication courses required of undergraduate Public Relations majors at ETSU
PR majors must complete all of these courses in addition to the core curriculum.  Prerequisites are listed here and in the ETSU Undergraduate Catalog.  Advising notes are in italics.

MCOM 1030, Introduction to Mass Communications
No prerequisite.  You should take this course before any other PR, journalism, advertising or RTVF courses.

PUBR 2700, Introduction to Public Relations
No prerequisite.  However, you should take this course after taking MCOM 1030, Introduction to Mass Communications.   You should take it before taking other public relations courses.

JOUR 2120, Writing for Print Media
Prerequisites-successful completion of ENGL 1010 and 1020, ability to type. You must take this course before you take PUBR 2770, Writing for Public Relations.

PUBR 2770, Writing for Public Relations
Prerequisite-a grade of C or better in JOUR 2120, Writing for Print Media.  You should take this course the semester after you take JOUR 2120, Writing for Print Media.

RTVF 2630, Writing for Radio/TV
Prerequisite-RTVF 2600, Survey of Broadcasting, or permission of instructor. PR majors do not have to take RTVF 2600, but you do need to get the instructor's permission to take the class.

JOUR 3150, Copy Editing
Prerequisites-a grade of C or better in JOUR 2130, Writing for Print Media II or a grade of C or better in PUBR 2770, Writing for Public Relations. You cannot take JOUR 3150, Copy Editing and PUBR 2770, Writing for Public Relations, in the same semester.

ADVR 3240, Advertising Principles
No prerequisite.  Note that this is a 3000 level course, so you really should complete 1000 and 2000 level courses in the major before taking this course.

RTVF 3602, Video/Film Techniques
Prerequisite-RTVF 2600, Survey of Broadcasting, or permission of instructor. PR majors do not have to take RTVF 2600, but you do need to get the instructor's permission to take the class.  It would be better to take RTVF 2630, Writing for Radio/TV, before you take this course.

PUBR 3770, Public Relations Publications
No prerequisite.  You really need to take MCOM 1030, PUBR 2700, JOUR 2120, PUBR 2770, and JOUR 3150 before attempting this course.  I strongly advise you to take these introduction, writing and editing courses before you take PUBR 3770, Public Relations Publications.

MCOM 4037, Communications Law
No prerequisite.  Note that this is a 4000 level course.  It should be taken late in the junior year or in the senior year.  It would be a good idea to take it before you take PUBR 4730, Public Relations Practices.

PUBR 4730, Public Relations Practices
Prerequisites-PUBR 2700 (Introduction to Public Relations), PUBR 2770 (Writing for Public Relations), PUBR 3770 (Public Relations Publications) and RTVF 3602 (Radio/TV Film Techniques).  You should take this course in the senior year.  You really should have also completed RTVF 2630 (Writing for Radio/TV) and JOUR 3150 (Copy Editing) before attempting this course.

PUBR 4080, Public Relations Internship
Prerequisite-permission of instructor.  You really should have completed almost all, if not all, of your other public relations, journalism, advertising, RTVF and speech courses before undertaking an internship.  You will be expected to be able to perform a wide variety of skills and have a good depth of knowledge before beginning an internship.  Click here for more information on internships in public relations.

SPCH 2300, Public Speaking
No prerequisite.  Since this is a 2000 level course, the sophomore year is a good time to take it.

SPCH 3390, Persuasion
No prerequisite.  Since this is a 3000 level course, the junior year is a good time to take it.  Taking this course before you take PUBR 3770, PR Publications, and PUBR 4080, Public Relations Internship, is a very good idea.

Select one of these two courses:

SPCH, 4346, Business and Professional Communication
No prerequisite.  Since this is a 4000 level course, the senior year is a good time to take it.

or SPCH 4357, Communication in Organizations
No prerequisite.  Since this is a 4000 level course, the senior year is a good time to take it.
