Some of the attractions of upper east Tennessee include:

• Roan Mountain State Park (Roan Mountain, TN): Camping, fishing, cabins, picnicking and nature trails. A popular attraction for the "fall colors" when the leaves start to change color. A great place to access the Appalachian Trail.
• Sycamore Shoals State historic Area (Elizabethton, TN): The first permanent settlement outside the 13 colonies. museum and year-round interpretive programs.
• Tipton-Haynes Historic Site (Johnson City, TN): Site of the Battle of the Lost State of Franklin in 1788. Site includes ten original and restored buildings, a cave, nature trail, and period demonstrations.
• Buffalo Mountain Park (Johnson City, TN): A 700-acre nature preserve with miles of hiking trails, scenic overlooks and picnic sites. Guided nature hikes available.
• Cherokee National Forest: An extensive national forest which runs the length of eastern Tennessee. hiking (including the Appalachian Trail), camping, fishing, and rafting are available.
• Historic Jonesborough Visitor's Center and Museum (Jonesborough, TN): Oldest town in Tennessee, founded in 1779. A history museum, walking and driving tours available.
• Bristol Motor Speedway (Bristol, TN): A major NASCAR facility with "the fastest half-mile track in NASCAR."
• Carter Family Museum and Music Theater (Hiltons, TN): Focuses on Sara and Maybelle Carter, major figures in the "hillbilly music" revival of the 20th century.
• Carroll Reece Museum (ETSU Campus): Provides an interactive, entertaining learning experience for children and adults with hands-on exhibits, programs, and classes.
• Hands-On! Regional Museum (Johnson City, TN): Participatory exhibits for children of all ages. Programs and special events in the sciences and humanities.
• Rocky Mount Museum Piney Flats, TN): Living history site, includes the Overmountain Museum and an original 1770 log house that served as capitol of the southwest territory (1790-92).
• Andrew Johnson National Historic Site (Greenville, TN): Two homes, a tailor shop and family burial of the 17th president of the United States.
• Appalachian Caverns (Blountville, TN): Nearly a mile of walkways take visitors through colorful caverns, some of which have ceilings of 135 feet in height.
• Countryside Vineyards and Winery (Blountville, TN): Tasting room, open year-round.
• Davy Crockett Birthplace and State Park (Limestone, TN): Museum, a log cabin replica and marker of the birthplace of the famed frontiersman. Picnicking, public swimming pool, and camping available.
• Nolichucky River Rafting (Erwin, TN): Whitewater rafting and beautiful scenery in the deepest rafting gorge in the south.
• Highland Theatrical Company (Johnson City, TN): A professional dinner theater offering a variety of Broadway comedies and musicals.
