PROBABILITY AND DISCRETE MATHEMATICS

A National Science Foundation Supported Undergraduate Research Experience

Summer 2008

East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee

Eight undergraduate students will be selected to spend two months (June 9 to August 8) during the Summer of 2008 working on a variety of non-trivial research projects in Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Molecular Biology, and Random Graph Theory & Structures. Probability Theory and Classical Analysis will often be used as fundamental tools in their solution, though there will be a few "stand alone" problems in discrete mathematics. Examples of papers written by students from past years may be found elsewhere on this website. A new feature of our program will occur on Friday afternoons when distinguished external visitors will lead sessions on Ethics in the Mathematical Sciences

Our REU team will travel en masse to the Annual AMS Meeting in Washington DC in January 2009, where the students' findings will be presented to a national mathematical audience. Other conference presentations will also be made, but cannot be predicted at this time.

Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to qualify, and applications from women, minority candidates, and physically challenged students are particularly encouraged. Spring graduates are not eligible. One of the eight slots will be filled by a student from ETSU.

The research will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Anant P. Godbole at East Tennessee State University, located in the scenic Northeastern corner of the state. Each student will earn a stipend of $3,600. We will pay for university housing.

The ideal candidate for this project would have taken a wide variety of upper-level Mathematics classes (including some of the following: Probability, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis). A distinguished academic record, and indication of research interest or potential are essential. Make sure you check the CRITERIA FOR SELECTION section for more details.
