MAA Meeting Minutes
November Meeting
November 5, 2001 7:30 p.m.
The Sophisticated Otter
Items Discussed
- Future Trips: The 2003 annual joint meetings
will be in Baltimore in January. Though we need to start
looking into funding soon, it shouldn't be nearly as
expensive. We should be able to get a van or two, and
drive to Baltimore. We should also be considering MAA Math
Fest. It will be in August in Vermont. It's more geared
toward students than some of the other events. MAA also
has travel grants available for this event.
- Spring Semester Recruiting: It was noted that
there are recruiting suggestions in the MAA pack that Dr.
Knisley received for our chapter. We must start our
recruiting early in the semester, before everyone gets
busy. We can get a list of math majors from Dr. Kerley
that we can use for a mass mailing. It was decided that we
should go bowling again, either the second or third week
in January. We will need to get the mass mailing, mass
e-mailing, and signs out at most a week before the date.
- Food Drive: We decided to participate in a
campus homecoming food drive, but refrain from building a
castle with our cans. Susan Hosler is in charge of
collecting money, and buying canned goods at Save-A-Lot.
Flyers will be put in the boxes in 310 and 311. Cans or
money need to be given to Susan by Friday, November 9.
(Side note: We collected $84.01 and 10 cans for the food
drive.)
- Ideas to Consider: We might want to have a party
at the end of the spring semester at either a lake or the Knisley's. Dr. Knisley also suggested that we could try to
revive Saturday Seminars. We could lure high school
students with a free meal and a CD-ROM of free math
software.
Attending the Meeting:
Michael Polson, Jason Lewis, Melody Rush, Kevin Lynch,
Clayton Clark, Dayla Pike, Aaron Gourley, Gabe Zimmer, Dr.
Jeff Knisley, and Tessa Bissette.
