MAA Meeting Minutes
April Meeting October 8, 2001 7:30 p.m.
The Sophisticated Otter
Items Discussed
- Joint Mathematics Meetings, San Diego, CA, January 6-9, 2002:
We discussed funding issues. We received $2055 for three
undergraduates to attend from 606 funding. Those members attending are
expected to chip in around $150 each to cover the costs. We will start
planning much earlier for the next Joint Mathematics Meetings which
will be in Baltimore next year. This should greatly reduce our
expenses, as we won't need to fly.
- Spring Math Symposium: We formed a committee to plan a high
school math symposium in the spring. Gabe Zimmer will chair the
committee. Other members of the committee are as follows: Dayla Pike,
Jason Lewis, Tessa Bissette, Will Parrish and Melody Rush. It was also
suggested that we talk to Dr. Debra Knisley about local high school
teacher contacts.
- Guest Speakers: We will henceforth try to bring at least one
guest speaker per semester to campus. Ideas for guest speakers
included contacting Kaplan. We could get it on the campus calendar,
and coordinate with other departments. Kaplan will send speakers for
free. Other possibilities include checking the MAA and SIAM speaker
lists. We can get some help from the math department to arrange for
speakers. We can also apply for 606 funding to bring speakers to
campus.
- Tee Shirts: A number of members think an MAA tee shirt would
be a good way to bring a little more attention to our chapter. We were
told to ask Linda Fore about places to have tee shirts screened. Gabe
Zimmer was the natural choice to design one, but suggestions are
welcome.
Attending the meeting:
Dr. Debra Knisley, Tessa Bissette, Dayla Pike, Aaron Gourley, Dr.
Anant Godbole, Jason Lewis, Susan Hosler, Michael Polson, Gabe Zimmer,
Lora Hart, Kevin Lynch, Will Parrish, and David Long .
