After Graduation

GOLD BAR RECRUITER (GBR)

The first potential position a newly commissioned Lieutenant can request is working as the Gold Bar Recruiter (GBR). The new 2LT helps the Recruiting Officer with recruitment on the ETSU campus. One of the advantages to being the GBR is that the pay and other benefits of an active duty military officer begin with the first day as GBR. The maximum time a Lieutenant can be GBR is 140 days. The GBR's start date is usually based on your OBC date.

OFFICER BASIC COURSE (BOLC II)

OFFICER BASIC COURSE (BOLC III)

BOLC III is the training a new 2LT receives on the specifics of their branch. This course is where you learn exactly what you will be doing for the Army. You receive weekends and most evenings off to do what you desire. The course is from 4 to 6 months depending on the branch in which you are assigned. The OBC courses are held at the home station for each branch, for example Armor is FT Knox, KY, Infantry is FT Benning, GA, Quartermaster is FT Lee, VA. For more information on a particular branch check our links page.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT

Your first assignment is based on your preference sheet. Once you complete your OBC course you travel to your first duty station of assignment. The military will pay to ship your household goods (washer/dryer, sofa, etc.). Once you arrive at your new station, usually you will be assigned as a platoon leader in charge of a platoon of soldiers. Each assignment is for three years, so if you choose not to continue your military career beyond the four year commitment, your first assignment could be the only one you receive. If you choose to continue, you request a specific assignment about 6 months before your 3 years are up. Once again the needs of the Army and what is available dictate your options.
