Misconceptions about Army ROTC

  • NO BASIC TRAINING. ROTC cadets do not attend basic training. In order to enter the ROTC program a person only has to be a full-time student who is trying to acquire a four year degree.
  • NOT EVERYONE IS IN THE INFANTRY. Most people seem to think the army consists of only infantry soldiers like the movies portray. The infantry is one of 16 different branches an Army cadet can request as his own. Infantry is actually one of the more difficult branches to get selected for by an Army cadet. • ALWAYS BEING TOLD WHAT TO DO. The military is like any other job. No one stands over your shoulder and tells you what to do every second. You are given a job or assignment and expected to complete the assignment to the best of your abilities. For example if you work in a grocery store as a bagger, you bag the groceries for customers as they come down the conveyor. You are not told to bag each individual item.
  • I DON'T LIKE PEOPLE YELLING AT ME OR IN MY FACE. In the military like any other job you do run the risk of being severely reprimanded for failing to do something. Some people will raise their voice to make a point but 99% of the time no one will yell at you. The only reason you should be worried about being yelled out is if you think you are susceptible to failure.
