WELCOME to the East
Tennessee State
University Friends of Music website. We hope that you will explore and find out
more about this volunteer organization.
We mainly raise funds that assist in increasing academic scholarships
for music students, provide financial support for special projects of music
faculty involving students in both instruction and performance. We encourage you to join us and thank you
for your support for these primary activities and more.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The ETSU Friends of Music
are those who – in the true sense of the meaning of
“friendship” – not only love music, but also are willing to
commit themselves to the promotion of excellence in the study, performance,
and appreciation of music in the East Tennessee State University community.
OBJECTIVES
Establishment
of scholarships and financial assistance for students of outstanding musical ability.
Sponsorship of master classes, workshops, and guest artist series.
Assistance with East Tennessee
State University
students and faculty artists in their effort to perform, to compete at the regional
and national level, and to recruit qualified students.
Acquisition of special
instruments, collections, and research materials.
Participation in such
other activities in the support of music as the board may deem appropriate.
BENEFITS
This
organization helps ETSU students, graduates, and faculty to lend their
musical and performance skills wherever they may be of assistance in the
community and beyond.
The members of the ETSU Friends
of Music take great pride in being able
to be of service to the community, as well as East Tennessee
State University
and the Department of Music.
ETSU FRIENDS OF MUSIC PROVIDES ENRICHMENT
ETSU Friends of
Music was founded in 1979 as
part of the ETSU Foundation to promote excellence in the study, performance,
and appreciation of music.
Contributions to the ETSU Department of Music have been made through
scholarships, sponsorships of master classes, recitals and concerts, touring
programs, and purchase of instruments and materials.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The
first scholarship was awarded for the academic year 1980-81. Over recent years the number of scholarship
awards has grown from one to an average of 20 per year being awarded for the
study of music at ETSU. Auditions are
usually held in the spring of each year on the ETSU campus. Scholarship endowments for the students of
music have been named in honor of Walker G. Patton, Elsie Artz, Floyd Cramer,
Virgin and Mary Florence Self, Lamar Alexander, Dr. B. Richard Compton, and
Paul Arrington. Our newest scholarship
is named in honor of Johnson City
composer, Kenton Coe.
ABOUT THE FRIENDS OF MUSIC
The ETSU Friends of Music
is headed by a volunteer board which meets monthly to conduct business of the
organization. Various events, concerts
or recitals are held each year that members may attend. The first concert, in honor of its members,
was held in 1979 with a performance by the newly organized ETSU String
Quartet. In successive years it has been
followed by the Monster Keyboard Concert, several interplay concerts, The Chester
String Quartet, and Mac Frampton, to name a few.
NOTE: Membership in the
organization is open to everyone who is interested in the support of music at
East Tennessee State
University. New members are always welcome.
