East Tennessee State University Chorale

The East Tennessee State University Chorale is an auditioned mixed ensemble of seventy-five voices that rehearses six hours per week throughout the school year.  Invitations for performances have taken them throughout the eastern United States to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, the White House in Washington DC, and the largest church in New Orleans.  In 2001 they made their third European concert tour which included performances in St. Peter’s at the Vatican in Rome and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.  Earlier tours resulted from invitations to perform concerts at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and at the Royal Festival Hall in London.  In February 2004, the Chorale will appear as a demonstration choir at the southern division convention of the American Chorale Directors Association in Nashville, and in March the men of the Chorale will perform for the national seminar of the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses at Harvard.

The Chorale’s first compact disc recording, “Live on Tour” was released in the fall of 1998, and their second CD, “Music for the Italy Tour” was released in the fall of 2001.  Both are available for purchase from the ETSU Music Department.

The Chorale’s first performance for the current school year will be on Sunday, November 9th, at 3:00 pm, at the First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City.  The men of the Chorale will be joined by male singers from many of the area high schools in the performance of Randall Thompson’s “The Testament of Freedom” accompanied by the ETSU Wind Ensemble.  The women of the Chorale will be joined by female singers from area high schools in the performance of Bob Chilicott’s “Peace Mass” accompanied by organist Craig Campbell.

The Annual Christmas Chorale Concert will be presented on Friday, December 5th, 2003, at 8:00 pm, at the Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church of Johnson City.  Both of the concerts are free and open to the public.  The men of the chorale will sing a Renaissance motet by Victoria and a movement from a contemporary Mass by Swedish composer Kaj-Erik Gustafsson. The entire Chorale will perform the motet, “Lobet den Herm” by J.S. Bach with harpsichordist Ann Jones. The Women’s Ensemble will perform a selection of traditional Christmas songs and spirituals under the direction of Deena Moore.  The Chorale will close with several favorite Christmas carols, including “The First Nowell” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.”
