ETSU Friends of Music Board Meeting

Minutes – April 24, 2003

Present: Benelisha, Ferguson, Flugrath, Harrison, Patrick, Pleasant, Rush, Sheets, Slagle,  Surface.

Benelisha called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm.

The minutes of the February and March meetings were distributed and approved as written.

TREASURER’S REPORT.   Surface indicated that the last report he had was from January 31st.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT.  Blackman was absent.

NEW BUSINESS: Because of a prior commitment, Benelisha reported that he needed someone to present the ETSU FOM Outstanding Student in Music Award at the President’s Concert this evening in the Culp Center Auditorium at 7:30 pm.  There was a request from Dr. Lynn Rice-See and Ben Caton (see attachment) requesting assistance with the purchase of several CD sheet music programs for piano music; the total of her request is for $482 plus shipping.  This request will be voted on at the May meeting.

OLD BUSINESS:  Benelisha reported that the Blue Plum Festival organizers already has their quota of food vendors for the downtown Johnson City event; it was suggested that Benelisha ask if FOM can sell only drinks.  Slagle suggested that FOM may want to participate with the Friends of the (JC) Library semi-annual used book sales by selling used cd’s, tapes, LP albums and possibly videos in order to raise funds; or there may be another group and/or event that would allow us to have a used music sale.  Benelisha stated that FOM needs to begin planning another concert fundraiser (spring or fall 2004) and asked for suggestions of musicians to be contacted.  Harrison reported that the spring Jazz at Shelbridge is still on hold due to a scaleback of events and budget cuts but that a fall event may still be possible.  The board discussed possible fallback locations; Benelisha suggested Massengil’s on the Bristol Highway, Flugrath will ask Sally Massengil Bell about the use of that facility; Tipton-Haynes was also suggested and Surface said that he would ask Penny McLaughlin, Exec. Dir. to contact Benelisha if Massengil’s is not possible.  Updates on this issue will be presented at the May meeting.  The discussion focused on 2 possibilities with Tipton-Haynes: 1) a single event sponsored by FOM with the rental of the facility, and 2) co-sponsoring an event with Tipton-Haynes where FOM & T-H would share resources (i.e., publicity, use of T-H mailing list, etc) and split the profits.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Rush announced that Lynn Rice-See has an upcoming concert on May 10th in Mathes Music Hall focusing on children’s music.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:55 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Stephen Patrick, Secretary 2002-03

Attachment: request of funds letter from Lynn Rice-See and Ben Caton

Dear Friends Board:

We are sure that you are aware that the state budget cuts are hitting the department of music hard, as well as the rest of the university.  We would like to provide those students who are on limited budgets receive as rich an education as possible.  The Sherrod Library is on a long-term schedule to accumulate as musch of the standard piano literature in score form as they can each year; however, even at the past rate it will be a long time before our library is stocked as desirable.

I would like to ask the Friends of Music to purchase the CD Sheet Music collection as outline (below) to be kept in the piano studio at ETSU.  These collections allow as many copies as desired to be printed out LEGALLY, thus allowing students to explore much more music during their study than they could possible buy.

The list is color-coded:

·                     the top black letters are our greatest need, solo piano music;

·                     the green lettering indicates volumes which would be extremely useful in the accompanying class;

·                     the red lettering indicates items which would be very useful in the accompanying class, but not as critical as those listed in green.

The item codes are from the http://www.cdsheetmusic.com site.  They can also be ordered from Hutchins and Rea’s website, http://www.hutchinsandrea.com , with a discount for volume and free shipping.

As you see, the total cost of this request is $480.00 which would be of great benefit to the piano students for a period of many years.  We appreciate your consideration of this request.

Truly yours,

Lynn Rice-See, D.M.A.

Benjamin Caton, Ph.D.
