ETSU FRIEND OF MUSIC

Minutes – July 25, 2002

Present:  Benelisha, Clark, Harrison, McAfee, Patrick, Rush, Slagle, Stout, Surface

Jim Benelisha called the meeting to order.

Minutes from the June meeting were not distributed, so they were not approved.

Treasurer’s report by Jim Surface … as of June 30th the balance was $12,850.51.

New Business:

Membership Committee report by Stephen Patrick.  Sample copies of the proposed membership letter were passed around for members to view and read.  Several different type fonts were used.  The content of the letter was discussed and the typeface Verdana seemed to be the most legible.  Copies of the letter should be distributed in early September.  The number of letters was discussed.  Tisha Harrison said that the list used for the Jazz at Shelbridge was around 2000.   We need to broaden our membership base and using a larger distribution list would be advantageous.  It would depend on the about of stationery we have on hand for the September mailing.  Also to be included in the mailing would be some sort of sheet to ask for assistance with events, service on the board and fundraising.

Discussion of revival of the annual dinner and membership meeting was discussed.  FOM needs to do more things for members in order for them to continue to support us.  It was discussed that perhaps a biennial dinner would suffice, along with the honor and recognition of a special contributor or donor to Friends of Music.  Another suggestion was to have a social event at Nelson Fine Arts Center or the Reece Museum.  This discussion ended with a motion by Alfreda McAfee that the Friends of Music begin planning for a 25th anniversary gala to be held in 2004.   The motion was approved unanimously.  An ad hoc committee will be formed to consider the various possibilities for this event … taking into consideration … time of year, parking, location, etc.

Nominating committee report by Jim Surface.  The board followed up on the nomination of Eleanor Hamdy and the membership approved her return to the Board.

Old Business

Jazz at Shelbridge.  Because of the successful event this past spring the Board has decided to pursue the event again next year.  It was discussed that we should start checking on possible times and dates now while Mrs. Stanton was planning next year’s calendar.  The Stantons were delighted with the event and support our return.

Maynard Ferguson Concert.  Tentative dates are Friday, April 11 or Saturday, April 12.  Tisha Harrison reported that Wellmont is still unsure about support.  Meadowview still wants to be involved and she is still working with them.  It was suggested that Tennessee Eastman Center is a possible venue.

Lunch for music faculty on Thursday, August 22.  Details for food and the luncheon were discussed along with the awards and recognition of music faculty supporters.

Other notes

Stephen Patrick passed around the sign up sheets for lunch payment at the JC Country Club … only a few slots remained for this responsibility for the coming year.

Also passed around was the sign up sheet for committee assignments for 2002-03.  Those in attendance filled in many slots but there is addition need for help on some committees.

The meeting was adjourned about 1:15pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Stephen Patrick, Secretary 2002-03
