ETSU Friends of Music Board Meeting

Minutes – May 22, 2003

Present: Bagnell, Benelisha, Flugrath, Harrison, Jones, McAfee, Patrick, Pleasant, Slagle, Stout, Surface.

Benelisha called the meeting to order at 12:20 pm.  Jane Jones was welcomed as our newest member and Betty Stout introduced Jones by giving a brief bio of her achievements and activities.

The minutes of the April meeting were distributed and approved as written.

TREASURER’S REPORT.   Surface reported that the balance from March 31 was $10,639.212 and the balance from April 30 was $9,165.97.  There was a question on the report about payment for $100 and payroll tax.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT.  Blackman was absent.

NEW BUSINESS:  Planning for the music faculty luncheon in August will begin soon.  Lists will be distributed at the June meeting for sign up of food.  Slagle will check with Blackman about time and date.  Tentative dates … August 21 or 22.  It was suggested that Stuart Cannon be contacted to provide background music at the lunch.

Pleasant passed around her personal notebook containing programs and notes for each of the FOM annual meetings and concerts from1978 through 1999, as well as other memorabilia.  It was suggested that FOM donate historical materials to the ETSU Sherrod Library Archives.  Materials would be made available to anyone wanting to research the organization’s history.  Patrick suggested that Pleasant contact Norma Myers.

OLD BUSINESS:

The board considered the request from Dr. Lynn Rice-See and Ben Caton (see April minutes for list) requesting assistance with the purchase of several CD sheet music programs for piano music; the total of her request is for $482 plus shipping.  Bagnell made the motion for approval of funding this request; Surface seconded.  Passed unanimously.

Pleasant reported that she presented the ETSU FOM Outstanding Student in Music Award at the President’s Concert on April 24th.  There was a humorous outcome … the student receiving the award, who had been performing, disappeared in the shuffle with changing the stage and was not there to receive the award.  Blackman presented his award later.

Slagle suggested that FOM may want to participate with the Friends of the (JC) Library semi-annual used book sales.  We could inaugurate our participation with the Fall 2003 sale by selling used cd’s / tapes / LP albums and possibly videos in order to raise scholarship funds.  It was suggested that FOM explore ways to advertise the sale and collection of items.  Slagle will check with Blackman to see if persons at ETSU could drop off their items at the Music Department; Benelisha indicated that the Acoustic Coffeehouse on Walnut Street be an alternative drop-off location.  A discussion followed concerning PSA announcements in News & Neighbor and other media about this new FOM project.  A notice in the symphony program could be another possibility.

Benelisha reported that the Blue Plum Festival organizers already has their quota of food vendors for this year’s downtown Johnson City event; but FOM should consider hosting a booth at the 2004 event, possibly selling food or drinks, as well as used cd/tapes/lp’s.

Discussion about the FOM Jazz at Shelbridge.  Harrison indicated that all events at Shelbridge are still on hold.   Flugrath is still trying to contact Sally Massengil about the use of Massengil’s on the Bristol Highway; she will contact Benelisha and Surface about availability and feasibility of time or dates.  Depending upon the availability of Massengil’s, Surface will contact Penny McLaughlin at Tipton-Haynes about possibly co-hosting the event there.  Benelish suggested The Oaks as another possibility.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Jim Benelisha distributed flyers for his new business … the Acoustic Coffeehouse, located at 415 West Walnut Street.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:56 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Stephen Patrick, Secretary 2002-03
