		MUSICAL CHAIRS PROJECT

Since 1954, the Department of Music at East Tennessee State University has occupied the building now known as Mathes Hall. In 1986, the building was remodeled to its current configuration. A Performing Arts Center is part of the campus master plan, but must await funding from the State of Tennessee. Until then, the Department is working to upgrade its facilities to better serve our students and our audiences. During the summer of 2002, new flooring was installed in the stage area of the Music Hall. The new floor is a wood laminate that really enhances the appearance of the room. The aisles between the audience seats have been carpeted, which reduces the noise level somewhat. We have purchased musicians’ chairs for our performers so that they have the proper posture. All of these upgrades have been funded through our regular budget. The next step in our upgrade is new seating for you, the audience member. If you’ve been to a concert, you know how uncomfortable those wooden seats can be! Many have begun to splinter or have lost layers of wood, further adding to your discomfort. The cost of replacing the seats will be about $40,000, which is more than can be funded through our regular budget. Our “MUSICAL CHAIRS” project gives you the opportunity to help us by sponsoring one or more seats in the hall. Each of the approximately 140 seats in the hall is available for sponsorship through a contribution of $250 per seat. An engraved plaque on the back of the seat will identify the sponsor or his/her designee. Installation Payments: Make your pledge now, then pay in installments as arranged through our (Music Department) office. Group Purchases: Any number of contributors can dedicate a seat together, provided that the group selects a representational name; due to space restrictions on the plaque, no more than 36 characters can be used. Matching Gifts: Over 1000 employers in the United States provide matching gifts for employee donations. Is your employer one of these! ETSU Faculty and Staff may make their contribution through ETSU’s monthly payroll deduction service.
