Slocumb Galleries to host Student Honor Show

JOHNSON CITY (April 18, 2013) – The annual Student Honor Show sponsored by East Tennessee State University’s Department of Art and Design and Slocumb Galleries will be on display from April 22-May 11 at Slocumb.

An awards reception will be held Monday, April 22, from 5-7 p.m. in the Ball Hall auditorium.  Various winners chosen by juror Jordan Ahlers, director of the Blue Spiral Gallery, Asheville, N.C., will be announced, as will art scholarship honorees.  Suzanne Burik-Burleson, the new executive director of the Johnson City Area Arts Council, will be the guest of honor, and music will be performed by the ETSU Music Double Reed Studio’s Katie Wright, Jessica Allison, Kaitlyn Flanery and Kyle Jones, directed by Dr. Heather Killmeyer.

Up to $1,000 in cash and gift certificates will be awarded, including the Nelson Fine Art Center Best of Show Award, the Faculty Choice Award, nine area merit awards, two awards for students in basic foundation art classes, and three Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA) craft awards.  Winning entries will be featured in the 2014 issue of The Mockingbird, ETSU’s student literary and art magazine.

Support from the Friends of the Slocumb Galleries provides cash and gift certificates to the student winners.  This year’s sponsors include the ETSU Department of Art and Design faculty, Nelson Fine Art Center, Jerry’s Artarama of Knoxville, the State of Franklin Chapter of TACA, Mark Russell, the Department of Art and Design Sculpture Fund, the Fletcher H. Dyer Graphic Design Memorial Fund, the Wyatt J. Moody Printmaking Memorial Fund, Highwater Clays, Soleus Massage and Target.  Reception refreshments will be provided by Marco’s Pizza and Earth Fare.

The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.  Hours for Slocumb Galleries, located in Ball Hall, are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.  Slocumb Galleries will be open Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in conjunction with ETSU’s spring commencement ceremonies.
