JOHNSON CITY (April 12, 2013) – The East Tennessee State University Advertising Club will hold a TOMS “One Day Without Shoes” event on Tuesday, April 16, from 1-4 p.m. at the Amphitheater.
“One Day Without Shoes” is an annual national event sponsored by TOMS shoes to help raise awareness for the plight of children around the world, who, through no fault of their own, are forced to live their lives without shoes on their feet, which can lead to life-threatening diseases and injuries.
While the event is meant to make an impact globally, Hali McCurdy, president of the ETSU AD Club, hopes the event can make a difference locally by asking students to donate a pair of their gently used shoes to be given to Johnson City’s Haven of Mercy, a local non-profit organization. The Ad Club’s goal is to collect 200 pairs of gently used shoes.
“While our goal as AD Club is to prepare our pre-professionals for the careers that await them, we also feel that like businesses and organizations in the ‘real world,’ we should give back to our community when we can. You don’t have to go to Guatemala to find people who live without shoes; they are here in our community as well. So, this event enables ETSU students and the AD Club to have a local, national and global effect,” McCurdy said.
The Ad Club TOMS One Day Without Shoes event will feature a barefoot walk around campus so that students may glean an insight into the lives of the shoeless children around the world.
There will also be games for students to win free TOMS swag, computers set up for students to save $5 off an order of TOMS, and a giveaway sponsored by Mahoney’s Outfitters.
The ETSU Student Government Association is also supporting this event with funding through the B.U.C. Fund.
